Our top trips departing in September

Where to go on holiday in September

At the onset of autumn, keep an eye out for crowd-dodging breaks in Europe, adventure-filled trips to Latin America and the return of the Northern Lights to Scandinavia and the Nordics. Browse our selection below then give our specialists a call to start planning your early-autumn escape.

The last of Europe's summer

September marks your last chance to take in the European summer. What’s more, it’s also an ideal opportunity to avoid the crowds, with such southern countries as Croatia, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece among the highlights. Look out for superb post-summer savings as the kids head back to school. Coupled with some excellent weather, it's one of our favourites seasons in southern Europe.

Autumn fun in the far north

While the south of Europe continues to entice with sun, sea and sand, up above the Arctic Circle, September sees the return of the Northern Lights. Unlike in winter, you'll be able to take in this celestial display with relatively balmy weather, coupled with the likes of hiking, cycling and the chance to forage for your own food in forests awash with autumn's fiery shades.

Holidays to the Americas

There’s also plenty of excitement outside of the Continent. As Canada and the USA slip towards a temperate autumn, you can avoid the crowds – and hiked prices – to take in the first signs of New England’s spectacular fall foliage. Turning south, the winelands, desert spectaculars and colonial cities of central and northern Chile come into their own. Southern Peru also eases into its shoulder season, meaning fewer tourists and still-great temperatures.

African adventures

Southern Africa is also entering its spring, meaning ideal safaris to Botswana, Tanzania and South Africa. You can even experience the Hermanus Whale Watching Festival, next door to Cape Town. Otherwise, consider a self-drive through Namibia's stunning scenery – just be sure to book well in advance. To the north, Morocco is also coming into its best, with Oualidia’s beaches sunny and quiet, with the locals having left.

The Middle East and India

Temperatures in the Middle East are more tolerable in September; Jordan is particularly appealing. Oman, too, delights with its cool mountains and the palm-fringed beaches of tropical Salalah. Then, heading across to India there are superb savings on leading five-star hotels in Rajasthan’s Golden Triangle – Delhi, the Taj Mahal and Jaipur.

Whale watching in Australia

Lastly, September is a good time for many parts of Australia. The weather is heating up in the south and the monsoons won’t have hit the north. The humpback whale migration off the east coast and cheaper airfares don’t hurt, either.
