Cunard Managing Director Peter Shanks said he expected strong demand for the voyage from both Australian and international markets, adding Sydney was one of the most in-demand ports for cruise ships.
Carnival Australia chief executive Ann Sherry said the decision, set to generate at least £6 million for the local economy, was a sign of confidence in the fast growing Australian cruise market.
The Royal Circumnavigation is scheduled to go on sale in mid-2010 but Cunard is taking expressions of interest from travellers interested in the three sailing options from Sydney, Fremantle or Adelaide.
The vessel will spend a total of 28 days in Australian waters during the voyage and make two visits each to Fremantle, Adelaide and Sydney. Final itineraries are currently being finalised with various port authorities.
