Embrace the history, culture, food and wine of southern France on this seven-day self-drive from Toulouse to Nice
Activity adventure | History & culture | June holidays | Self-drive | Spa
Explore the regions of Languedoc and Provence on this seven-day self-drive tour. Feel the weight of history in Carcassonne and Avignon, walk among olive trees, lavender and vineyards, fill up on foie gras at centuries-old markets, and bask on the beaches of the Cote d'Azur. Along the way you'll stay in a series of spectacular hotels, which perfectly capture the history and romance of this beautiful region of southern France.
Day by day itinerary
Fly to Toulouse, collect your hire car and drive to Hotel Abbaye Ecole de Sorèze, situated within six acres of landscaped gardens and featuring an indoor swimming pool, sauna and superb restaurant serving a menu of classic French cuisine. A notable attraction is the Saturday market in the nearby town Revel, which dates back to the 14th century. Look out for the stalls in the centre of the covered area; these positions are reserved for centuries-old family businesses. More active pursuits include swimming and sailing at the Lac de Saint-Ferréol and cycling and hiking among the dappled forests and castle ruins of the Montaigne Noire, a little-known range rising 1,200m from the plain of Toulouse.
Stay: Hotel Abbaye Ecole de Sorèze
En route to Avignon we recommend you stop at Cité de Carcassonne, a stunning medieval fortress overlooking the River Aude with 52 towers and more than 3km of surrounding walls. Then check in for two nights at Auberge de Cassagne & Spa, a 5-star hotel with a wonderful spa and gourmet restaurant. The hotel is located in Le Pontet, near the historic city of Avignon. Both the city and surrounds offer much to keep you busy, from vineyards and wineries to scores of pretty villages, of which Gordes and Roussillon, with their narrow streets and ochre-shaded buildings, are two of the finest.

Saint Paul de Vence
Drive east to the hilltop town of Saint-Paul de Vence, between Nice and Cannes, and check in for two nights at La Grande Bastide, an 18th century country house with swimming pool, whirlpool bath and wonderful views across the the village to the distant sea. The town itself is home to a host of modern and contemporary art museums and makes a great base from which to explore the Cote d'Azur.
Stay: Le Mas de Pierre
Drive to Nice, return your hire car and catch your flight home.
