Portugal’s south is a dreamy coastal and escapist region, with some of the world’s best vineyards and a wondrous coastline. Lisbon, at its heart, is a strongly beating reminder of exploration past. It’s also a place of exquisite present, lined with sophisticated hotels and contemporary chic. Here, a past saturated in significant European history and the ageless romantic tradition of Fado, meets a new Portugal, with hip hotels and cutting-edge cuisine. This bespoke tour takes in old and new vineyards and cultural and contemporary culinary highlights, with stays in fabulous four star hotels, all made effortless with a personal driver to take you from one exclusive wine tasting to the next.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1

With included airport lounge access, you'll be well rested for your flight to Lisbon where, after an included private transfer, you'll check into your four-star hotel. Lisbon is one of Europe’s most charismatic cities, not least because of its captivating and compelling tradition of Fado. You’ll enjoy a performance of this unique style of song and music during a delicious dinner.

Day 2
Torres Vedras/Óbidos

Sit back during a scenic drive to Lisbon’s beautiful wine region before indulging in a leisurely lunch at an organic vineyard. Delectable cod dishes – a local speciality – are paired with fabulous wines from the estate. In the afternoon, your driver will take you to one of the biggest wine producers in the region, with opportunities to try some outstanding wines. This heady day ends in the enchanting medieval village of Óbidos, set within old castle walls.

Day 3

Begin the day in Belém, one of Lisbon’s most fascinating quarters. Here the River Tagus meets the Atlantic, and this is where many now legendary voyages of discovery were launched. The magnificent Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, 16th century monastery, where Vasco da Gama was entombed, is a fitting monument to Portugal’s age of exploration, and is one of today’s guided tours. Also included is a port wine tasting and relaxing by the river, sampling Bélem’s famous custard tarts. Save some space for a lingering lunch in downtown Lisbon, in an 18th century theatre before walking it all off exploring Lisbon’s hills, the historic neighbourhood of Alfama and the resplendent Lisbon Cathedral.

Stay: Corpo Santo Hotel (Superior)

Day 4
Setúbal Peninsula/Arrábida Mountain

Head for the beach in the comfort of your chauffeured drive. The Setúbal Peninsula is divine, sweeps of sandy beaches studded with dunes. Visit one of the largest private estates in Portugal and enjoy a traditional lunch served on a lovely beach. The afternoon is spent exploring the cliffs and mountains of Arrábida, with splendid views of the sea, looking over secluded coves and home to wonderful fauna and flora. Birds of prey swoop above, dolphins can be spotted in the sea below. While enjoying the views, sample more regional delicacies with helpings of Torta de Azeitão, sweet egg pastries, served with a glass or two of local Moscatel.

Day 5

The first stop today is the fairytale hilltop town of Sintra, a magical start to the day. This medieval and perfectly preserved walled town is full of dreamy palaces and architecture, and a guided tour of the famous Pena Palace is included. After a traditional lunch within the walls, your private driver will whisk you off to a lavish wine tasting, in the charming region of Colares and in the most westerly vineyard in Europe. Afterwards, have an enchanting evening in the fabulously atmospheric fishing village of Cascais.

Day 6

A scenic drive south into the striking Alentejo region leads to the oldest wine producer in Estremoz. A medieval town with an impressive castle and well known for both marble and wine production, it’s a lovely spot to linger for a while. Enjoy a guided tour of the winery, a wine tasting and a long lunch featuring Alentejo specials. Finish the day in fine style in Évora, Alentejo’s foremost city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, historically a significant trading centre and still full of old-world charm, not least in the centre, still semi-circled by medieval walls.

Stay: Corpo Santo Hotel (Superior)

Day 7

A final day full of exclusive indulgences, starting with a visit to one of the smallest and most highly regarded wine producers in Portugal. Tour the winery, set in picturesque surroundings, and enjoy a bespoke wine tasting. Then set off for another exquisite experience – a tour of the extraordinary Palácio Nacional de Mafra, a convent-palace that is one of the most extravagant in Europe. This 18th century baroque masterpiece presides over the small, pretty town of Mafra. There are over 1,000 rooms, two bell towers with 98 bells, and a library full of ancient tomes, carefully guarded by a colony of bats. Don’t worry, they’re only let out at night, to protect the precious archive from small insects. The afternoon is at leisure before a fantastic farewell dinner to celebrate the end of your stay.
