9-day tailor-made self-drive from £1,025 pp incl. flights

Short description

Explore the history, landscapes and wines of France’s Loire Valley on this nine-day tailor-made self-drive

In Brief

  • 2 Nights Paris
  • 3 Nights near Tours
  • 3 Nights Angers

Recommended for:
City | Food & wine | History & culture | Honeymoon | Self-drive

Highlights of this nine-day holiday include touring the French capital in a Citroen 2CV, living like royalty in one of the Loire Valley's largest chateaux and discovering the region's amazing food and wine on a series of tastings and food-focussed tours.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1

Travel by Eurostar to Paris and check in for two nights at the boutique Pont Royal Hotel, situated close to the Seine in the artistic and literary Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Stay: Hotel Pont Royal

Day 2

The French capital has more familiar landmarks than almost any other city in the world, but even if you've seen the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre before, there's always more to discover. Which is why on your second day we've included a city tour with a twist - a journey through the heart of Paris in a classic French car, a Citroen 2CV.

Stay: Hotel Pont Royal

Breakfast included

Day 3
Château de la Bourdaisière

Collect your hire car and set off for the Château de la Bourdaisière near Tours, where you'll stay for the next three nights. Owned by the Prince of Broglie, the chateaux is one of the biggest in the Loire Valley, offering 25 rooms and suites scattered over an estate committed to ecological stewardship. Activities available at or near the hotel include cookery classes, horse riding, golf, cycling, hot air ballooning, walking, tennis and swimming in the outdoor pool. To round things off, the excellent restaurant Bar à Tomates invites guests to savour dishes made from ingredients picked the same day.

Stay: Chateau de la Bourdaisière

Breakfast included

Days 4-5

These days are the perfect opportunity to explore the sights in and around Tours. The town itself is brimming with medieval streets and squares, half-timbered houses, museums, monuments, parks and gardens. It's also a food lovers' paradise. Try rillettes (similar to pâté), rillons (cooked cubes of pork belly), fouaces (buns cooked on a wood stove) and goat's cheese from Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine. We also recommend visiting the Royal Château of Amboise, which is perched on a promontory overlooking the Loire and houses the tomb of Leornardo da Vinci in its chapel, and the former royal city of Blois, whose riverside castle is said to be the birthplace of Richard the Lionheart.

Stay: Chateau de la Bourdaisière

Breakfast included

Days 6-8

Drive south to Angers and check in to Foch 21 in the heart of the city. This former 19th century mansion is a haven of refinement and elegance, with stark white interiors offset by wooden floors and giant wall prints. Spend the next two days exploring Angers and the surrounding area. Sites not to miss include the Cathedral of Saint-Maurice, Angers Castle and Château de Brissac, the 'Giant of the Loire'.

Stay: 21 Foch

Breakfast included

Day 9

Return to Paris, return your hire car and board the Eurostar back to London.
