About

Recommended for:
City | City-break | Food & wine | History & culture

This itinerary contrasts Hong Kong's big-city dazzle, exquisite Asian gastronomy and vibrant markets with Macao's hotchpotch of Portuguese and Chinese heritage architecture, old town culture and myriad cuisine. You'll start among Hong Kong's skyscraper-studded skyline and the magnificent Victoria Harbour, enjoying an included tour on the world's steepest funicular with soaring views of the city below, shopping among bustling markets – or high end designers – and relaxing on the beach. Then, transfer to Macao and its European history, from ancient ruins to Chinese temples and modern towers boasting panoramic city vistas. And, you'll do it all alongside stays in the Mandarin Hong Kong and Macao that feature exquisite spas, infinity pools, and an array of haute cuisine.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Depart the UK

Begin your holiday in style with included airport lounge access. Then, board your overnight flight from the UK to Hong Kong, arriving on day two.

Day 2
Hong Kong

On arrival, take a private transfer from Hong Kong airport to your hotel, the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong. Located in the heart of Hong Kong Island near the glittering waters of Victoria Harbour, this is the flagship hotel of the Mandarin Oriental Group. Rooms are sprawling, all plush furnishings and elegant touches, with stone and marble bathrooms adding to the luxe. Perhaps enjoy a refreshing swim among the waterfalls and clever lighting of the hotel’s swimming pool before enjoying dinner tonight at the hotel's Michelin-starred Man Wah; located on the 25th floor and serving award-winning Cantonese cuisine with spectacular views across the city. Or, relax with a massage before heading out into the city to explore.

Stay: Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong (Deluxe)

Days 3-4
Hong Kong

The next two full days will be spent exploring Hong Kong and its hidden – and discernible – delights, after sumptuous breakfasts, of course. We've included a half day tour of Hong Kong Island, the start of which is just moments from your hotel. The star ferry takes you across Victoria Harbour, one of the jewels of Hong Kong, before heading onto the Peak Tram, the world's steepest funicular runway that looks down onto the spectacular city surrounds, buzzing Kowloon and the edge of hillside verdure. The famous fishing village of Aberdeen is next, a floating community of markets, temples and eateries – a sampan ride into the typhoon shelter for a close up look is particularly spectacular. You'll finish in Repulse Bay, which, despite its name, is a haven among the city bustle. You'll ride along the crescent of sandy beach on the city's sunny south side before ending in Stanley, where a relaxed ambience is home to markets, promenades lining the waterfront and upmarket residences.

Day 5
Hong Kong to Macao

Head to Macao with a private transfer to the pier, ferry crossing to your hotel, the Mandarin Oriental Macao – a chic, high-rise oasis within the bustling glamour of the city’s central hub. Located on the edge of downtown Macao, overlooking the modern harbour and vast Nam Van Lake, Mandarin Oriental Macao is all about style. Close enough to the city’s attractions to be convenient, and not so close as to be sucked into the Vegas-like glitz, this hotel has got the balance just right. Rooms are ultra-modern in earthy tones – the Premier View offerings are particularly spectacular with panoramic vistas over the glittering bay. Perhaps take a dip in the heated infinity pool, looking over sweeping city views, before dinner at the sumptuous Vida Rica Restaurant, revelling in the panoramic vistas of the South China Sea as you enjoy innovative blends of Asian and western dishes.

Stay: Mandarin Oriental, Macau

Days 6-7
Macao

The next two days will be spent exploring the myriad of Portuguese and Chinese heritage that makes Macao one of the Far East’s most fascinating cities. Don’t miss the historic ruins of St Paul’s, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listed “Historic Centre of Macao” that includes Taoist temples, baroque churches and European-feel Senado Square. And, to the south, among idyllic villages and rolling hills, there's the chance to while away the hours on beaches or pick up a souvenir in one of the street-lining markets. More contemporary offerings come in the form of the Macao Tower, vaunting spectacular views across the Pearl River Delta, and the futuristic design of the Science Centre. It's all done alongside a Portuguese flair that makes Macao’s gastronomy as varied as its architecture, and the Mandarin's offerings adhere accordingly, from Vida Rica's fine Chinese dining – the Alaskan spider crab is particularly notable – to the marble-clad bar's casual tapas and cocktails. Macao is also quite unbeatable when it comes to nightlife, from glitzy casinos to shows including the House of Dancing Water, a spectacular swimming pool-centred theatre performance with professional divers in a spectacular extravaganza, for which we've included tickets.
