Costa Rica accounts for just 0.03% of the Earth's surface, but incredibly contains almost 6% of the world’s biodiversity with twelve extremely different microclimates. This 13-day tailor-made tour is a wonderful showcase of this incredible array of flora and fauna, where you'll also explore the country's natural splendours and amiable culture. You'll start in buzzing San José before heading into dense jungle canopies to catch sight of a plethora of wildlife, spotting the likes of toucans, sloths, monkeys, turtles, hummingbirds, and iguanas via expert-guided hikes, bird watching tours, horse riding trips and more. It's all culminated at the grandiose Arenal volcano and serene mist of the Monteverde cloud forest, alongside stays in luxury eco-lodges with personal plunge pools burrowed deep within verdant rainforests.
Day by day itinerary
After included VIP airport lounge access, you'll board your flight and arrive in the capital to transfer to your hotel, the spectacular converted-mansion Grano de Oro, featuring grand lobbies, two outdoor Jacuzzis and a charming terrace restaurant.

Costa Rica's coast is the rugged, laidback little sister of its neighbouring, and far more touristy, Caribbean islands, comprised of remote sandy beaches, craggy headlands and lush rainforests. The next day sees you explore it, embarking on a kayaking tour and hike from the spectacular azure-framed peninsula of Punta Uva. You'll traverse a coast comprised of rocky cliffs, deep caves and verdant rainforest, spotting monkeys, sloths, river turtles, bats and iguanas among the dense canopy as you're led by an expert guide.
The following day enjoy a half-day Kekoldi tour where you'll learn about the Kekoldi indigenous territories, before a hike among the lush trails and ultra-scenic landscapes of the subtropical forest. Keep an eye (or ear) out for the call of the aptly-named howler monkey, one of the loudest animals on Earth.

Selva Bananito Lodge
Today you'll experience eco-luxury at its finest in the form of Selva Bananito. Built in a private jungle reserve on the Bananito (Little Banana) River, this lodge offers wooden-walled and thatched-roofed cabins, personal hammocks, and a whole host of nature and adventure tours to explore the surrounding lowlands. Perhaps hike through the jungle and learn about the endemic trees, spot endless species of bird perched on the surrounding ferns on canopy walks, or trek on horses along deep forest trails.

Pacuare Lodge is tucked away in a steep gorge, deep in rainforest-covered mountains on the banks of the Pacuare River. For the adventurous, it's one of the best places in Costa Rica to go white-water rafting, or there's a vast array of alternative excursions, from bird watching tours to indigenous hikes. Exquisite suites blend perfectly with outside's verdant roof, from riverside villas with personal spring-fed swimming pools to cabins high in the rainforest canopy.

Today you'll take a private transfer to the foothills of the spectacular Arenal volcano, a magnificent stratovolcano surrounded by lava fields and transitional forest (a combination of rainforest and cloudforest). You'll stay in the sprawling stream-lined cabins of Arenal Kioro, where the volcano serves as the impressive view in most bedrooms, which feature hot tubs and tropical touches. Take advantage of the area and eponymous national park with volcano hikes and fishing in the lake, and explore the surrounding area with visits to the Tabacon hot springs and La Fortuna waterfall, as well as night walks, hanging bridges, caves, canyoning, horse riding, and a wealth of other activities. Enjoy a gentle private hike along the base with wonderful views of Arenal volcano.
In the morning take a private transfer and lake crossing to Monteverde transferring to your hotel near the cloud forest. The next few days will be spent exploring the spectacular scenes of this stunning forest, a mountainous jungle in the clouds, with trails through thick canopies of ferns and orchids along with misty suspended bridges. There's also the spectacular eight bridges of the canopy treetop walkway, reaching altitudes of 180 feet, and walks through one of the world's largest live butterfly exhibitions. A night-time wildlife hike affords chances to watch bats, insects, birds and nocturnal mammals, with fireflies and phosphorescent mushrooms glowing among the nighttime mist.
Stay: El Establo Hotel (Superior)
Today you'll transfer back to San José for your flight home, arriving the next day. Or, you could extend your trip with a visit to the northwest coast of Guanacaste, where rugged beaches and dense, biodiverse forest are wonderfully explored with diving, surfing and bird watching.
