Every 12 months, the Post Office releases its guide to the best-value destinations for the year, taking into account the cost of meals, drinks and other essentials British holidaymakers are likely to buy during their time away. As 2022 has unfolded, and the demand for travel has grown, we've also been keeping a close eye on which countries are offering the most bang for your buck.
Below, you'll find eight recommendations based on our most recent research, with options including such Mediterranean classics as Turkey, Spain, Cyprus and Portugal, as well as a selection of far-flung favourites, from South Africa and Kenya to Argentina and Malaysia. As always, our destination specialists are on hand to help you plan, offering their expert insight to help you create a holiday to remember.
Great-value destinations in Europe
With short flight times, a wide choice of accommodation and plenty of offers to be found outside the summer months, many parts of Europe already offer excellent value for off-peak holidaymakers. Our recommended destinations offer all of this and more, with favourable exchange rates (particularly for Turkey), falling prices and some truly exceptional value on the ground.
Great-value destinations worldwide
While Europe might seem like the obvious choice for a great-value holiday, there are also several options further afield where, once off the plane, your pound will pack a serious punch. In South Africa and Argentina in particular, excellent exchange rates mean cheaper meals out, and even more of that excellent wine, while the likes of Kenya and Malaysia continue to see consistently competitive prices across the board.

Straddling Europe and Asia, Turkey provides a bridge between cultures and continents. Secular and Westernised, it's still possible to get a flavour of traditional Turkey by stopping for tea at a street market or being scrubbed and massaged in a hamam steam bath.

Cyprus has been fought over for centuries and been under foreign control for much of that time, meaning there are African, Asian and Eastern influences at work here although the island is culturally European.

Having produced the first global empire, Portugal’s cities proudly showcase its maritime wealth, its idyllic coast is watched over by hilltop castles and its wines are lauded the world over.

Portugal's most popular island welcomes you with year-round sunshine and impressive mountain scenery. Lying halfway between Portugal's south coast and the shores of Africa, Madeira offers a delightful blend of relaxation and adventure.

From its cultured cities and sprawling wine regions to its sun-soaked islands and coast, take in the best of Spain with our curated range of fly-drive holidays, rail journeys and luxury beach breaks.
