Introduction
High in the misty folds of the Río Savegre Valley, San Gerardo de Dota is one of Costa Rica’s most rewarding destinations for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike. Set at around 2,200 metres above sea level and bordering Los Quetzales National Park, this peaceful mountain village is surrounded by pristine cloud forest and cooled by fresh alpine air.
San Gerardo is particularly renowned as one of the best places in the country to see the resplendent green quetzal. The forest here provides ideal habitat, with abundant aguacatillo trees supplying the bird’s favoured fruit. Quetzals are present year-round, but sightings are most frequent during the nesting season in April and May, when guided early-morning walks offer the best chance of glimpsing these iconic birds in flight. Beyond quetzals, the area supports exceptional birdlife, including hummingbirds, tanagers, trogons and bellbirds, making it a highlight for avid birders.
The Río Savegre runs through the heart of the village, its crystal-clear waters feeding waterfalls, trout pools and scenic footpaths. Gentle riverside walks and more challenging cloud forest hikes lead into Los Quetzales National Park, which spans multiple forest types and ecosystems rich in biodiversity. With its tranquil atmosphere and extraordinary wildlife, San Gerardo de Dota offers a rare glimpse of Costa Rica at its most serene.
