Sailing the Danube through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia, this luxury river cruise combines some of Europe’s city greats with its lesser-known gems. Alongside cobblestone villages and Benedictine abbeys, you’ll pause at imperial Vienna, medieval Budapest and the castles of Česky Krumlov, Salzburg and Bratislava. All are brought to life by complimentary excursions, including private concerts and horse-and-carriage rides. Then, on-board, you’ll be treated to open bars, fine dining and all-inclusive luxuries that range from yoga classes and live music to an indoor pool, gym and lecture series. Indeed, you’ll sail on Europe’s only all-balcony, all-suite river ship, where even the standard accommodation is the continent’s largest and comes with butler service.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK/Vienna, Austria

After enjoying complimentary airport-lounge access, your British Airways flight will see you to Vienna. You’ll be met on arrival and brought to your luxury river ship, settling in to your stylish suite, complete with private balcony, iPad and Inspresso coffee machine. Your personal butler will be on hand to serve complimentary hors d’oeuvres and canapés, or top up your included in-suite beers and soft drinks. Indeed, from the Bistro and Michelin-inspired Waterside restaurant to the piano-accompanied bars, you’ll enjoy complimentary champagne, fine wine and spirits. You’ll also begin your included dining; expect six-star cuisine from just-caught fish and tasting menus to tapas bites and freshly carved meats.

Day 2
Esztergom and Budapest, Hungary

After a breakfast, perhaps of made-to-order omelettes and pancakes, you’ll begin your included programme of shore excursions, arriving into Esztergom. Once the Hungarian capital, your expert-led tour will showcase its centuries-old churches and Cathedral Treasury before turning out to the charming village of Visegrád. It’s home to a 13th-century citadel whose hilltop perch commands sweeping views over the Danube. Returning to the ship, you’ll then sail on to Szentendere – a riverside village where cobbled streets host cute art galleries. Then, ending the day in Budapest, you’ll enjoy an exclusive classical performance, held in the 17th-century Baroque courtyard of the medieval Buda Castle.

Day 3

With a full day in Budapest, you’ll have a choice of shore excursions. Perhaps enjoy a walking tour of the Gothic-Revival Parliament Building and the nearby Great Market Hall, or visit the Lázár Equestrian Park, where you’ll enjoy scones, an archery display and a horse-and-carriage ride around the farm. Alternatively, take in Budapest’s Jewish heritage, with a tour of its Moorish-revival synagogue, weeping-willow monument and the Jewish district, where inviting cafés line historic courtyards. Of course, there’s always the option to spend the day at leisure, relaxing in Budapest’s bath houses, exploring its medieval grandeur and 19th-century architecture, or making use of your ship’s onboard spa. If you’re travelling over the festive period, don’t miss the Christmas markets.

Day 4
Bratislava, Slovakia

You’ll be welcomed into Slovakia today by its capital, Bratislava, where your guided touring starts with the monolithic hilltop castle. Its thousand-year-old history spans from the stone age to 15th-century Gothic severity and the Renaissance beauty of the 1500s. You’ll then be brought into the city, where a walking tour will showcase the grand St. Martin’s Cathedral and colourful Main Square. There’s also the option to pay your respects at the Holocaust monument and Chatam Sofer Memorial – a centuries-old Jewish cemetery. You might then want to lose yourself among the sidewalk cafés of the city’s cobblestone streets, admiring the colourful buildings before returning to the ship, perhaps for a soak in the indoor pool.

Days 5
Krems and Melk, Austria

Your first port of call as you return to Austria will be Krems – a pretty town guarding the pristine Wachau Valley with 15th-century walls. Your guided touring will also take in its Baroque flourishes, 18th-century old town and a chocolate tasting. It’s then on to Melk, whose famed abbey dates back to the 11th century. Perched spectacularly on high, it’s a tour-de-force of frescoes, gilded accents and painted cloisters. You’ll also have some time to wander the cobblestone lanes of the village’s fairy-tale old town, or to head out to Artstetten Castle, where onion-domed towers look out over gorgeous countryside.

Day 5

You’ll arrive into Linz this morning – a European Capital of Culture. Set at as a historic trading post between Hungary, Germany, Poland and Italy, it wears its international influences on its sleeve, from the neoclassical to the neo-Baroque and neo-Renaissance. The medieval centre is especially impressive. Your included touring also offers the option of heading out to the Czech Republic’s Česky Krumlov, whose 13th-century castle is joined by Gothic architecture and Renaissance town squares. Alternatively, Salzburg offers Sound-of-Music sights and Baroque majesty, played out over concert halls, fortresses and frescoed palaces.

Day 6
Vienna, Austria

Ending back in Vienna, you’ll have some time today to explore the Austrian capital. It’s where the Austro-Hungarian Empire was ruled over, something remembered by great concert halls, Baroque boulevards and, yes, grand Habsburg palaces. It’s all showcased by your included coach and walking tour. Alternatively, there’s the option of heading out to the 18th-century Schönbrunn Palace – a Baroque castle and the setting for many of Austria’s most historically profound moments. As well as taking in its spectacular interiors, your tour will also bring you among its curated gardens and the Royal Carriage Museum.
