About

Recommended for:
All-inclusive | Mountains | Natural world | Ocean cruise | Off the beaten track | Photography | Wildlife

The stretch of coast that runs south from Anchorage to Vancouver is one of the most spectacular on earth. A region of carving glaciers, ancient forests, cragged mountains and plunging fjords, it’s nature at its most dramatic. But, amid these landscapes are communities, whole cities even, which thrive and prosper despite their remoteness and apparently inhospitable surrounds. And it’s these very places that you’ll discover on this luxury tailor-made cruise, which begins with a night at a hotel in Anchorage plunging south past gold rush towns to Alaska’s isolated capital and on through the mountain-framed waterways of the Inside Passage, finally arriving into Vancouver on Canada’s British Columbia coast.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK/Anchorage

With airport lounge access included, you’ll begin your holiday in relaxing style before your daytime flight out to Anchorage. Then, on arrival, make your way to your city-centre hotel before heading out to explore. As Alaska’s largest city, there’s plenty to keep you busy, with a burgeoning foodie scene and some excellent museums all set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and an inlet teeming with salmon. You never know, you might even see a wandering bear, a common sight in a city where nature is never far away.

Stay: Anchorage hotel (Deluxe)

Days 2-3
Seward to Kenai Fjords

Check out this morning for the short journey south to Seward on the shores of Resurrection Bay, gateway to the north Pacific and starting point of your luxury Seabourn cruise. Stepping on board, you’ll settle into your suite before enjoying the facilities; there’s a whole range of gourmet dining options, the welcoming relaxation of Seabourn Square, and a suitably indulgent spa, the largest on any ultra-luxury ship. It all makes for a wonderful introduction to life on board as you sail south to the spectacular Kenai Fjords for optional excursions that range from sea kayaking to guided nature walks.

Days 4-5
At sea/Icy Strait Point

After a full and relaxing day at sea, you’ll arrive at Icy Point Strait, erstwhile beating heart of Alaska’s once-vital cannery industry. Employing hundreds of workers, fish canneries were big business in this part of the world, before the advent of refrigeration when many of the factories vanished, reclaimed by the forests or simply left to rot. At Icy Point Strait, however, there’s the opportunity to see how these large-scale operations worked, with restored buildings, a museum and even a cannery demonstration.

Stay: Seabourn Sojourn (Deluxe)

Days 6-7
Juneau/Haines

Continuing south, the landscapes become ever more dramatic as you approach Juneau, Alaska’s isolated capital; sandwiched between a mountains, waterways and an ice field it’s only accessible by sea or air. There are no roads, and no one seems in a hurry to build one. And why would they, with summer in particular bringing endless opportunities for hiking, bear watching and even zip-lining? After a full day to explore, you’ll head south to Haines to spend a day exploring the region’s Chilkat-Tlingit heritage and watching as bald eagles soar over forested peaks.

Stay: Seabourn Sojourn (Deluxe)

Days 8-9
Tracy Arm/Endicott Arm/Sitka

Spend a memorable day cruising through the Tracy Arm-Ford Terror Wilderness, gazing out from your ship’s teak deck to views of creaking glaciers and fjords some 30 miles long. Then, as you sail through iceberg-studded waters, you’ll arrive into Sitka, the former capital of Russian Alaska framed by myriad forested islands, sheer granite peaks and the imposing cone of volcanic Mt. Edgecumbe.

Days 10-11
Wrangell to Rudyerd Bay

A rough and ready launchpad for trips into the Anan bear-watching observatory, the outback town of Wrangell was once a big player in Alaska’s lumber industry. But those days have long since gone, and the town is only just recovering after years in the doldrums. It is, however, a place that exemplifies the Alaskan spirit, while the surrounding countryside offers up some superb day hikes and trips into the spectacular Stikine River Delta.

Day 12
Ketchikan

Prettily perched on the Alaskan Panhandle, Ketchikan is a town best known for its emblematic totems, while the majestic wilderness of Misty Fjords National Monument can easily be reached on a day trip. Back in town, Creek Street’s colourful jumble – all local’s restaurants and curio shops – sets the scene for wonderful afternoon strolls.

Days 13-15
Prince Rupert to Vancouver

Having successfully navigated the famous waterways of the Inside Passage, you’ll arrive into Prince Rupert, across the border in Canada. Here you’ll find a superb selection of restaurants and some interesting museums that showcase the region’s aboriginal heritage. It’s all set around a pretty harbour with views out to the islands of Haida Gwaii. From Prince Rupert, it's a scenic cruise south across two spectacular days, taking in Bella Bella, Alert Bay, the Johnstone Strait and finally the Seymour Narrows before your arrival into Vancouver.
