Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Depart UK

Start your holiday in style with included airport lounge access before your overnight flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Day 2
Colombo, Sri Lanka

Arrive in Colombo and transfer to your hotel, spending the rest of the day relaxing and exploring at your own pace. Take in the delights of its colonial architecture and leafy boulevards, or choose to relax, perhaps with a dip in the hotel pool as you look forward to the adventures to come.

Stay: Galle Face Hotel, Colombo (Deluxe)

Day 3
Colombo

Before setting sail this evening, you'll have a full day to explore. Sri Lanka's capital is a wild mix of modern metropolis, traditional temples and old Dutch architecture. This buzzing city has a collection of great museums, including the National Museum that explores the countrys long and varied history, and there's a host of exciting markets, cafés and bars to explore. Colombo is also a brilliant base if you want to visit some of the countrys other exciting cities or top beaches. Head down to Galle, just two hours away, where old Portuguese and Dutch architecture transports you back to another time and the seafood is some of the freshest in Sri Lanka, or head to Hikkaduwa to hit the beach.

Day 4
Hambantota

The port town of Hambantota is the gateway to fascinating temples and thrilling wildlife experiences. Yala is one of Sri Lankas oldest and best-loved national parks and on game drives here you could spot elephants, sloth bears, wild boar and leopards, while Udawalawe is home to the remarkable Elephant Transit Home that cares for orphaned elephants until they can be released back into the wild. For an insight into Sri Lankas religious history, climb the 500 or so steps up to the ancient Mulkirigala Rock Temples. Sitting on top of a 673-foot-high rock, temples have existed here in some form for over 2,000 years. Today, Buddha statues and intricate, hand-painted murals adorn the inside of the temples.

Day 5
At sea

Sailing to Trincomolee, you'll have a full day at sea – plenty of time to make the most of your ship's facilities, from the gym to the spa to expert lectures on the history, geography and wildlife of your next destination. Be sure to embrace life onboard the world's largest sailing ship, maybe even taking the wheel to feel the force of the winds and currents.

Day 6
Trincomalee

Historic Trincomalee is known for its deep-water port and cultural sites. The Koneswaram temple is an ancient religious complex, which sits on top of a rocky promontory looking out to sea. The best views here can be found at Lover's Leap, a spot with a sad past that's worshipped by fishermen. Gain an insight into rural life on a trip out of the city to the small village of Hiriwadunna, passing modest huts, paddy fields and banana plantations along the way. In Polonnaruwa, see the well-preserved ruins of ancient Sri Lankan dynasties at an archaeological site, where stupas, palaces and tombs date as far back as the 13th century.

Day 9
Sabang, Indonesia

Sabang, also known as Pulau Weh, is a paradise island of forested hills, bright white beaches and clear, warm waters. The highlight here is the underwater world, which you can explore with a snorkel or diving gear. With exceptional visibility and a variety of subaquatic geography – think deep canyons, rock pinnacles and fabulous marine life. Indeed, with everything from manta rays and sharks to eels and all sorts of colourful fish and corals, getting under water here is a must. On land, take a motorcycle tour of the island starting from the Kilometre Zero monument, which marks the beginning of the Indonesian archipelago.

Day 10
Banda Aceh

Banda Aceh was struck by a devastating tsunami in 2004. The poignant and incredibly moving Tsunami Museum is an essential stop, with towering waterfalls that mimic how the waves would have felt and rolling footage of the event. The stunning and ornate Mesjid Raya mosque is also worth a visit. Beyond this northern city lies an under-the-radar natural wonder: Gunung Leuser National Park. Here, the thick rainforest is home to exciting wildlife, such as tigers, elephants and even rhinos. A rhino sighting is rare, but on a day hike you'll see monkeys and orangutans swinging from the branches within this leafy ecosystem.

Day 12
Ko Adang, Thailand

With tales of pirates and sea gypsies, and thick jungle interiors teeming with wildlife, Ko Adang and neighbouring Ko Rawi are a charming pair of islands in the far south of Thailand. Sitting within the Tarutao National Marine Park, near the Malaysia-Thailand border, these two isles have superb beaches, sparkling warm seas for snorkelling and scuba diving, and stunning views all-round. There's also a sea gypsy village on the eastern side of the island, where you can learn about this unique culture. South of Ko Adang, Tiny Ko Lipe is equally beautiful. Pattaya is the island's main beach and this sheltered bay has chilled-out beachfront restaurants and bars, plus great snorkelling straight from the shore.

Day 13
Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi has miles of shimmering, silver sands and fabulous beach resorts. But there's plenty more appeal on this Malaysian island. Take the cable car over the virgin rainforest that cloaks Gunung Machinchang, the island's second tallest peak where viewing platforms offer exceptional views over to southern Thailand on a clear day. At the highest point, the Sky Bridge is a thrilling walkway above the forest canopy. The Telaga Tujuh Waterfall is just a 20-minute walk from the bridge and offers a refreshing place to dip your toes before returning down the mountain. For wildlife watching, head to Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, a mangrove forest where you can spot pythons, otters, monitor lizards and bonnet macaques.
