Day by day itinerary
Fly to Nice where a private transfer will bring you along the coast to Monte Carlo and your Oceania cruise ship, the aptly named Riviera. You’ll set sail this evening, so take the chance to explore Monaco’s famous Old City, perhaps driving the spectacular Grand Corniche, taking in the glitz and glamour of the Casino de Monte Carlo, or heading out of town to take in the pretty villages of the Côte d’Azur. This evening, you’ll return to the ship, settling sail towards Saint-Tropez.
Dropping anchor in glamorous Saint-Tropez, you’ll have a full day to explore the town’s meandering cobblestone lanes or dive into the wonderful Provençal scenery that lies beyond. Perhaps call into a local winery for a tasting, stop to admire the medieval beauty of the region’s villages or head out along the coastal path for sweeping views of near-empty bays framed by the forested ridges of the Massif des Maures.
Provence (Marseille), France
Continuing west you’ll arrive into Marseille for a visit to the historic fishing port of Cassis, nestled beneath an imposing form of its 14th-century château – now a luxury hotel. Take in the town’s beaches and bustling restaurants or head once again into the Provençal countryside to explore the hilltop village of Les Beaux and the Gothic grandeur of World Heritage-listed Avignon’s Papal Palace, the 14th-century seat of Western Christianity.
Today you’ll reach Palamos on the eastern shores of Spain’s Costa Brava. Here, unspoilt beaches, pretty coves and a beautiful, pine-studded back country set the scene for a series of charming villages, monasteries and the intriguing Teatre-Museu Dalí where visitors can follow Salvador Dalí’s creative journey from his early experiments with Surrealism to his passion for science and his works on the theme of Nuclear Mysticism.
Olbia/Porto Cervo (Sardinia), Italy
Sailing through the night, you’ll arrive into Olbia, a refreshingly authentic slice of island Italy on Sardinia’s west coast. Between café-lined squares and busy wine bars, the city’s centro storico is particularly appealing, home to an impressive 11th-century cathedral complete with Roman artefacts and an ancient Punic tomb. Meanwhile, outside the city, Costa Smerelda’s towering cliffs, secluded grottoes and sandy beaches make for a wonderful day’s exploration.
Palermo (Sicily), Italy
A short hop north brings you to Sicily’s capital, Palermo. Disembark for a full day exploring the city’s legion of historic treasures, calling first into the 12th-century cathedral. Having been added to and renovated over the years, it’s now a showcase for a rich variety of architectural styles, from the severity of the Gothic period to the artistic flourishes of the Renaissance. Then, moving on, there are the Arab-Norman jewels of La Zisa – the King’s summer residence – and Cuba Palace, with its intricate detailing and sprawling Royal Park surrounds.
Arrive at Amalfi on the Italian mainland to take in its 12th-century Capuchin monastery and 11th-century cathedral and cloister. Then, head on to sophisticated Positano, where Moorish-style homes cling to impossibly steep cliffs studded with lemon trees, all tumbling down to a secluded beach and pretty bay.
Disembark in Civitavecchia for the short transfer to Rome. Spend the day exploring its world-famous monuments, from the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel to the Roman grandeur of the Coliseum. Or, perhaps head out into the Roman countryside to the town of Castel Gandolfo, home the Pope’s former summer residence, which opened to the public as a museum in 2016. Then, in the evening, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
