Day by day itinerary

Day 1
London to Venice

Boarding the Belmond British Pullman at London Victoria, you’ll settle into 1920s carriages that have carried the likes of Queen Elizabeth. Expect mosaicked detailing, plush armchairs and polished dark-wood throughout. You’ll also be treated to an indulgent brunch, paired with a Bellini cocktail as the Kentish countryside drifts past. A Eurotunnel hop will then see you to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Here, a white-gloved steward will escort you to your oak-panelled cabin to change for your four-course dinner. Exquisite menus reflect the route – highlights include Brittany lobsters. Before retiring to the crisp damask sheets of your private berth, end the evening with a drink in the bar car, soundtracked by a baby grand piano.

A three-course lunch will then see you into Italy, leaving plenty of time to relax in the bar car with your fellow travellers. Then, as you cross the Venetian Lagoon, you’ll be treated to an afternoon tea of freshly baked cakes, pastries and gourmet sandwiches. Then, on arrival, you’ll be met by one of Venice’s iconic water taxis, bringing you right along the Grand Canal to your luxury hotel’s private pier. A typically Venetian property, complete with fine art and canal views, you’ll be centrally poised to explore this floating wonder.

Days 3-4

With two full days in Venice, we’ve included a walking tour to help you get your bearings. You’ll centre on the famed Piazza San Marco, admiring its golden mosaics, marble-inlayed floors and great, 12th-century bell tower. You’ll also enjoy a visit to the skyscraping domes and Byzantine treasure trove of St. Mark’s Basilica along with skip-the-line access to Doge's Palace. You’ll beat the queues for its jewellery box of sculpture, mosaics and golden stairways. Then, there’s some time to explore on your own. Perhaps head out on a lazy boat ride to the Venetian Islands’ glass-blowing wonders and colourful heritage. Or, simply relax in a quiet, plaza-side café.

Driving through rolling hills and olive groves, you’ll reach this once-great city’s excavated remains. From the iconic stadium to the Temple of Zeus, it’s packed full of ancient wonders. Put simply, Santorini is an icon, its whitewashed houses tumbling perilously down the side of a volcanic caldera and out to stunning beaches. You’ll arrive by tender boats to walk mazing alleyways that knit together old mansions and humble residences alike. It’s all watched over by 18th-century monasteries and a Venetian castle, which you’ll descend from by donkey or cable car. And, given the region’s volcanicity, much of the surrounding prehistory has been wonderfully preserved, showcased in a fascinating museums and Akrotiri – an excavated Bronze Age settlement. But, if it’s the natural world you’re interested in, swim in thermal springs and walk alongside dramatic lava formations before retiring with a Greek wine.
