About

Recommended for:
Ocean cruise

Northern Europe is an ideal cruise destination. Not only can you knit together some of Scandinavia’s most iconic capitals – Stockholm, Helsinki and Stockholm – but you can take the hassle out of Russia with a visa-free visit to St. Petersburg. That’s all while enjoying the best of the Baltic cities, whose medieval old towns are wonderfully evocative and delightfully compact – perfect for a cruise stop. Either side of a pause in Berlin, expect to take in Lithuania’s cobblestone charm, Latvia’s castle severity and Estonia’s new-world sleek.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK to Copenhagen, Denmark

After beginning your trip with complimentary airport access, you’ll fly out to the Danish capital to take in its effortless combination of Scandi cool and unique heritage. While the Rococo Royal Palace is an obvious highlight, there’s everything from neoclassical mansions to Scandinavia’s largest collection of Islamic Art. An included transfer will also see you aboard your luxurious ship. Here, you’ll be surrounded by designer accents, from the Lalique grand staircase to your marbled stateroom. You can also expect superb full-board dining, with USDA prime cuts in the poolside grill, quartet-accompanied afternoon teas and fine French-dining degustation.

Day 2
Berline (Warnemünde), Germany

Your first port of call is quaint Warnemünde. Sited on 12 miles of pristine sands, it’s long been renowned as an idyllic summertime getaway. But, it’s not all about beach relaxation, with the town’s historic cottages host to a delightful spread of restaurants. However, if you haven’t visited already, we highly recommend the short journey on to Berlin. Here, the Reichstag’s imperial might stands side by side with cutting-edge contemporary art galleries and monuments. The hauntingly beautiful Holocaust Memorial is especially memorable.

Day 3
At sea

With a day spent cruising the Baltic, you’ll have plenty of time to acquaint yourself with the Marina’s luxury facilities. Perhaps curl up with a good book in the library, play a hand in the casino or indulge with a spa treatment. There’s even an artists’ studio along with a series of cooking courses. Of course, there’s the obligatory pool and on-board theatre. That’s if you can tear yourself away from the restaurants; remember, Oceania spend more on ingredients per guest than any other cruise line.

Day 4
Klaipėda, Lithuania

You’ll next make land in Lithuania with Klaipėda. Concentrate your time here on its beautifully cobbled old town, where redbrick buildings line waterways and weathered statues stand guard over quiet squares. Everyone from the Russians to the Swedes and Germans have left their mark here, something evidence by its delightful spread of architectural styles. In particular, don’t miss its now-ruined castle. Built by the Teutonic Knights and first mentioned in the 13th century, it’s now an atmospheric archaeological museum, focusing on its last remaining tower.

Day 5
Riga, Latvia

For something more complete, Riga’s Castle, although founded in 1330, has been near-constantly reimagined into the riverside vision of green spires we have today. But, the city is so much more than its icon, with its charming centre resplendent in a remarkably complete Art-Nouveau aesthetic. Think cobbled streets lined with pastel-coloured buildings, themselves capped with high gables. Don’t miss the Town Hall Square, whose eponym is a lesson in redbrick extravagance.

Day 6
Helsinki, Finland

Heading over the gulf, you’ll arrive into Helsinki. The Finnish capital impresses with both a neo-Renaissance heritage and a full gamut of daringly contemporary architecture, from steel churches hewn from rock to chapels of dramatically curved blonde wood. Otherwise, the Suomenlinna is a special highlight – an 18th-century fortress that spans five islands. It’s a UNESCO-listed gem. You might also want to indulge with that most Finnish of traditions– the sauna. Our pick is the Löyly for its cinnamon buns and seafront location.

Days 7-9
St. Petersburg, Russia

It’s now time for your cruise’s centrepiece. We’ve chosen to recommend this itinerary partly because it features a longer stay in St. Petersburg, with other routings offering just one night. And, you really do need the extra time here; the best way to consider St. Petersburg is as a giant open-air museum. That’s why a guided service is so important, not least because it affords you visa-free entrance. You’ll take in the golden dome of the St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the artistic treasures of the Hermitage and, yes, that multi-coloured masterpiece – the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. There’s of course, plenty of opportunity to enjoy the city’s famous ballet and theatre.

Day 10
Tallin, Estonia

Back through the Baltic Sea, you’ll arrive into Tallinn. The Estonian capital is a spectacular blend of glass-and-steel modernity and what is one of Europe’s best-preserved walled cities, replete with centuries-old stone towers and terracotta-capped houses. It’s a true step back in time, complete with guild houses, Baroque palaces and apothecary shops all set between pretty parks. Our recommendation? Take a rest from sightseeing at one of its 1920s-inspired speakeasy bars or head out into the Estonian countryside for a village tour.

Day 11
Stockholm, Sweden to UK

You’ll end in Stockholm, comparing historic palaces to intriguing design studios. It’s all spread over 14 islands, with pretty bridges pointing towards its historic centre – Gamla Stan. Here, regal art galleries, mazing alleyways and the world’s largest still-inhabited royal castle compete for your attention. As your last port of call, you’ll end with an included transfer to meet your flight home.
