It all begins a river cruise among the great cities, natural splendour and whale wildlife of French Canada, before you you’re treated to one of the darlings of world travel – New England in the fall. After hopping off from the island wildernesses of Atlantic Canada, you’ll then sweep along America’s northeast coast to sample Maine lobster, Boston’s heritage and Rhode Island’s Victorian riches. Additionally, you’ll enjoy fine dining and open-bar indulgences throughout, along with luxury stays in New York and Montréal.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2

Begin your trip in style with complimentary airport lounge access before your day flight out to Montréal. You’ll be met on arrival by a private driver, who’ll see you to your landmark hotel where spa indulgences, fine-dining delights and your marbled room are hosted in a 19th-century bank. And, found in the city’s historic centre, you’ll have all of old Montréal’s delights to explore, showcased on an included tour. Highlights range from the skyscraping harbour and the Renaissance beauty of Bonsecours Market to the bustle of Chinatown, the beautiful Botanical Gardens and the leafy campus of McGill University.

Stay: Hotel Le St James (Deluxe)

Day 3

You’ll have some further time to explore Montréal today before you board the ultra-luxury Silver Spirit. A recent refurbishment has cemented its six-star credentials, with its near one-to-one staff ratio dishing up all-inclusive fineries that range from grill-your-own seafood to sommelier-paired French classics at the only Relais & Châteaux restaurants at sea. The included drinks even extend to champagne. Back in your butler-served accommodation, the ship’s suites pamper with private verandahs, marbled bathrooms and down duvets. Then, outside of your room, lectures, piano bars, cigar lounges and ballroom dances vie for your attention.

Day 4
Québec City

Your first port of call is Québec City. Although smaller than its Montréal cousin, the provincial capital certainly packs a lot in, with its concentration of winding, cobblestone streets and historic buildings a romantic step back to France. It’s all mixed with a certain North-American grandeur, something evident across its stern, 18th-century fortifications and the ornately gilded Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame. There’s even North America’s oldest-standing Catholic Church. Alternatively, consider turning out of the city to visit First Nations villages, taste your way through the local vineyards or cycle out to spectacular waterfalls.

Day 5
Cruising Saguenay River

Today is given over to cruising the Saguenay River, winding through the Canadian countryside to watch the changing autumnal colours as you journey south. It’s a view best taken, drink in hand, in at the Panorama Lounge, or simply from the comfort of your own bed. On top of the already-fantastic selection of facilities, you’ll also be able to try your luck in the casino, pick out a good book from the library or play a few hands in the card room.

Day 6

Arriving into Sageunay, you’ll travel through one of the northern hemisphere’s most southerly fjords, arriving into a land of towering pine trees and sandy river beaches. Look out for everything from majestic moose to giant blue whales. The region’s eponymous national park is a particular highlight and the backdrop for ultra-scenic hikes that bring you down to valley floors and up to peak heights. For further adventure, look to sea kayaking and mountain biking excursions, or simply relax with a boat cruise.

Day 7
Baie-Comeau, Quebec

Sited at the meeting of the Manicouagan and St Lawrence rivers, the landscape of the Baie-Comeau region has been shaped by glacial retreats. It’s all wrapped up in a biosphere reserve, with excursions leading you between old-growth forests, mountain viewpoints and mighty glaciers, showcased in a fascinating, multi-media exploration station. You’ll also learn of the region’s rich cultural heritage. There’s everything from the quaint town to 19th-century lighthouses and the National Center, which tells the story of historic shipwrecks and offers beach views, possibly of frolicking whales and dolphins.

Stay: Silver Spirit (Deluxe)

Day 8
At Sea

As you cruise over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, you’ll have some further time to enjoy the ship’s facilities. Along with the spa indulgences, live pianists in the bars and the full-scale productions of the Venetian Lounge, there’s a superb selection of activities to engage in. Highlights range from wine tastings to dance and language classes. Alternatively, browse the boutiques or just take in the sun poolside – accompanied by a cocktail or glass of champagne, of course.

Day 9
Sydney, Nova Scotia

You’ll make land in Cape Breton with Sydney, the island’s sole city. It’s a slice of civilisation among the wild scenery, with its past evidenced in Loyalist-era buildings and its future emblemised by a sleek waterfront, host to trendy bars and restaurants. Then, heading out of the city, you’ll be treated to some of North America’s most scenic drives, sweeping along great granite cliffs, cragged mountain passes and idyllic fishing villages. Along the way, you can learn about the region’s Celtic influence with stories and musical performances or pause at the Louisburg Fortress, an 18th-century French castle.

Stay: Silver Spirit (Deluxe)

Day 10

Hopping over to Nova Scotia’s mainland, you’ll arrive into Halifax. Dotted with green parks and heritage buildings alike, it’s delightfully charming, not least for its waterfront strolls and love of craft breweries and live music. Put all together and it’s not hard to see why a certain Charles Dickens termed it a “gem of Georgian architecture” – something taken in on horse-drawn trolley tours. Don’t also miss out on the mid-18th-century Halifax Citadel and the 1800s Old Town Clock. Lastly, there’s the chance to taste your way through the wineries of Annapolis Valley, pairing samples with local cheeses.

Stay: Silver Spirit (Deluxe)

Day 11
Bar Harbor, Maine

You’ll arrive into America with Bar Harbor. Perched idyllically on Maine’s Mount Desert Island, it’s been a favourite getaway since the 19th century, something remembered by lavish Victorian mansions and cute restaurants. Perhaps also turn out into the natural spectacle that is Acadia National Park, where kayak trips and delightful hikes see you between pretty beaches and forest-dotted cliffs. This being Maine, there’s also the local seafood, with that fresher-than-fresh lobster prime among the highlights.

Stay: Silver Spirit (Deluxe)

Meals: B L D

Day 12
Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is an American great and the country’s oldest city. A stroll along its cobbled streets will bring you along the wonderfully named Freedom Trail. From restored tall ships to the 200-year-old State House, it showcases America’s fight for independence. Or, let a historic trolley bus take the strain, bringing you to the leafy redbrick of Harvard University. Indeed, the city has long been something of an intellectual and cultural hub, something exemplified by a superb collection of theatres, art galleries and concert venues.

Stay: Silver Spirit (Deluxe)

Meals: B L D

Day 13
Newport, Rhode Island

Continuing down the New-England coast, you’ll arrive into Rhode Island’s Newport. Founded in the early 17th century, its deep-water harbour fast made it a leading port, with much of its colonial-era charm still apparent to this day. Then, in the 19th century, wealthy industrialists were keen to add in their summer retreats, their palazzi inspired by Italy, chateaux from France and manor houses from the Elizabethans. Head to Ocean Drive for the best examples, including the Vanderbilts’ summer cottage, before taking a scenic cliff walk.

Stay: Silver Spirit (Deluxe)

Days 14-15
New York, New York

You’ll end in the Big Apple, where you’ll be met off the Silver Spirit by a private driver for the journey to your luxury hotel; its grand Beaux-Arts façade belies a flawlessly contemporary interior. Positioned in midtown Manhattan, you’ll have all of New York’s delights on your doorstep. Alongside such icons as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the glowing neon of Times Square, the city’s creativity lives on in trendy rooftop bars, the artistic treasures of the MoMA and a superlative dining scene.

Stay: The Knickerbocker, New York (Superior)

Days 16-17
New York/UK

Check out of the hotel and take your included private transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK, arriving the following day.
