Day 4
Salamanca/Vega de Terrón

It’s time to board your ship today, but not before a guided excursion to Salamanca – a World Heritage town whose treasures include the Old and New Salamanca Cathedral, a unique blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture built between the 16th and 18th centuries. You’ll also visit the Casa de la Conchas – the House of Shells. This 15th-century curiosity features a façade of 400 decorative scallop shells, the symbol of St James, whose famous pilgrimage route carves through Spain’s northern reaches to the city of Santiago de Compostela. In the evening, transfer to Vega de Terrón to board the AmaVida, checking into your luxury stateroom before embracing the spread of onboard facilities, from the sun-deck swimming pool to the indulgences of the spa.

Day 5
Castelo de Rodrigo/Pinhão

Having crossed the border into Portugal, this morning’s excursion takes you to Castelo de Rodrigo, whose proliferation of almond trees have lent it the name, White Village. Revel in sweeping views across the town’s valley surrounds before taking to its medieval streets on a guided tour, pausing to admire historic houses decked out in terracotta roofs and 16th-century façades complete with ornate, Manueline-style windows. There’s also the option for an energetic hike to the town’s upper reaches. No matter which tour you choose, you’ll end with a tasting of local almonds, cheese, bread and, of course, wine. The day concludes with a leisurely cruise along the Douro to Pinhão, where a traditional dinner awaits.

Day 6

Spend the day exploring Pinhão, beginning with a walk to the town’s railway station on the famed Douro Line – Portugal’s most iconic railway. And, although you’ll not have the chance to ride the rails, the station is a highlight in itself, replete in colourful tile panels depicting scenes inspired by the surrounding Douro Valley. You’ll then enjoy a wine-paired lunch at the family-run Quinta da Avessada, a wholly authentic affair complete with local entertainment. Take the chance to visit the nearby museum, which charts the region’s history and wine-making heritage, and offers the chance for a tasting, before exploring the town further under your own steam.

Day 7
Peso da Régua

Having sailed on to Regua, you’ll be treated to a choice of excursions. There’s a tour of the ancient town of Lamego, home to one of Portugal’s most important pilgrimage sites – the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Sat atop Mount St. Stephen between the 18th and 20th centuries, it’s a treasure-trove of architectural styles, from its grand Baroque staircase to its Rocaille temple, dedicated almost entirely to Marian iconography. Alternatively, for active types, there’s the chance for a hike up the Lamego Steps, or Holy Staircase. Then, after lunch, you’ll visit Mateus Palace and Gardens, with their manicured topiary and impressive cedar tunnel.

Your cruise continues in delightfully scenic style with a full day's sailing to Entre-Os-Rios, where you’ll enjoy an authentic dining experience in a local la quinta. The following morning, you’ll continue on to Porto where a guided tour will showcase the city’s hilly backstreets, landmark bridges and labyrinthine old town – a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the main square, with its abundant shops and cafés, hike out to the harbour through winding cobblestone streets, and taste the city’s most celebrated produce – port. Day 10 is left free for you to explore further, while on day 11, you’ll transfer to the airport for your flight home.
