Day 10
Odessa

Romance, adventure and grandeur are just a few of the words to describe the pearl of the Black Sea, Odessa. The city was founded in the 18th century by Catherine the Great, although its roots started with the ancient Greeks. Once part of Imperial Russia, Odessa was a major port and was considered the fourth largest Russian city after Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Warsaw. Prior to the revolution, Odessa’s golden sands were a magnet for the Russian aristocrats. Today, it's a pull for any literary fan – Alexander Pushkin the famed poet was exiled here in 1823. And it's been immortalised in the bittersweet novel Moonlight in Odessa. Elsewhere, the vast estates of the likes of Novikov, Tolstoy and Gagarin make for fascinating visits and can be seen as part of one of today's included excursions, combined with a wonderful musical recital.

Day 11
Constanta

Some 250 kilometres from Bucharest, Constanta is Romania’s second largest city. With a deep history that goes back 2,500 years, legend has it that Jason and his Argonauts passed this way having found the Golden Fleece. Like much of the coastline on the Black Sea, Constanta changed hands many times, founded by the Greeks who named it Tomis, it was then captured by the Romans in 29 BC who changed its name to Constanta – after Constantine the Great’s half-sister. It was part of the Bulgarian empire for 500 years, then fell prey to the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Again, experience all that Constanta has to offer with an included half-day walking tour.

Incredibly, that's three times more that the Suez Canal and four times more than the Panama Canal – though you would never know how busy it is as you take in in from the comforts of your ship.
