Duodo’s setting is superb. It’s surrounded by the charm of the Sestiere di San Marco, where you can visit the city’s most important museums and attractions. Take in a show at the Teatro La Fenice, shop along Calle Larga XXII Marzo or sightsee at Piazza San Marco. Here, you’ll find Venice’s famous basilica façade and its skyline-defining brick bell tower. You’ll also find the wonderfully Gothic Palazzo Ducale just a few minutes’ walk away. But, remember to discover the city’s canals and hidden laneways too – often just as atmospheric as their more famous siblings.
First built in the 17th century, the palace enjoys a rich history that centres around the city’s competing families and courtesans. And the aristocracy of the 1600s would still recognise the draping curtains, detailed frescoes and rich fabrics of today’s Duodo Palace. It’s truly extravagant Venetian style, complete with antique paintings, exposed ceiling beams and original architectural detailing. All rooms come with marble bathrooms while most feature canal views and the Junior Suites are particularly opulent. The most impressive frescoes are reserved for the latter.
Start your day with an indulgent Venetian breakfast. Expect freshly baked croissants and pastries washed down with cappuccino and even prosecco. This being Italy, you’ll also be treated to a full range of cold cuts and cheeses along with the usual fresh fruits. Made-to-order cooked eggs are available too. You’ll also be spoilt for choice with lunch and dinner given the hotel’s setting – some of Venice’s finest restaurants are to be found within a short distance. Regional specialities include sweet and sour seafood, risottos and fritole sweet pastry fritters.
Throughout the Duodo Palace, you’ll be treated to such original features as the Fireplace Room’s hearth and the Well Room’s curb. There’s even a small berthing area allowing water taxis direct access to the hotel. For further relaxation make use of the historic Reading Room or, if you’re after more contemporary trappings there’s the free high speed WiFi. You’ll also be able to have a drink at the compact bar, perhaps taking your glass up to your room as you get ready to explore Venice’s cultural nights.
