Easter Island
When Dutch explorer Jacob van Roggeveen, who anchored off the island in 1722, reported hundreds of them gazing out to sea, he caught the attention of Captain Cook. Yet when the famous navigator arrived 50 years later, the moai had all been toppled - their industrious craftsmen had vanished. Fifteen statues have now been resurrected and stand silhouetted against the sun, but hundreds lie around the island, massive and immovable.
The mysterious civilisation that flourished in near total isolation must have crumbled within half a century. The Casa Rapa Nui, where youll be staying, offers a perfect base from which to explore the island. There are two buildings within 200m of each other and nine very private rooms, each with their own facilities and an outdoor Jacuzzi. Each day, easy to more difficult walks are on offer, combined with picnics on rocky outcrops or along the shore, but always at breathtaking locations. See the Rano Kau Volcano and its huge crater.
Visit the ceremonial village of Orongo and admire the petrogylphs in the quarries and houses built from flagstone. Stop at the archeological site of Puna Pau, where soft red stone was quarried to make hats for the moai, and spend time at Anakena Beach, the only sandy beach on the island.
