Where to go on holiday in March
With spring in the air, March offers the chance to enjoy the quieter charms of Europe while further afield, the likes of Costa Rica and Sri Lanka are at their sparkling best. Our specialists have picked out their top trips for March below.
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
March is the month that the world's most famous train sets off again after its winter break. The classic journey between London and Italy is an absolute favourite among our clients and specialists, but there are a host of other options, too. Perhaps add on a stay in Verona, for example, or head to Italy's northern Lakes for some indulgent relaxation. As the year progresses, other routes also open up, taking in the likes of Vienna, Prague and Berlin. Looking for a long-haul alternative? The Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express, which runs between Singapore and Bangkok offers a similar old-world charm in a tropical setting.
The Americas & Caribbean
While the likes of Canada are only just starting to warm up, Arizona and Las Vegas, for instance, enjoy some of their best weather. It’s a similar story in the Caribbean while for some great deals, look to Bermuda’s white-sand beaches; there’s good spring weather and pre-peak prices. Central America, while starting to heat up, is also still pleasant to explore – Mexico's Kukulkan festival is a highlight as are the jungles and beaches of Costa Rica. South America is also still an excellent option, with further festivities to be had in Peru's Cusco and its jubilant Semana Santa Holy Week.
India & Sri Lanka
In turn, India delights with colourful Holi merriment, just remember to book well in advance. And, not to be outdone by its bigger brother, Sri Lanka’s beaches and ancient cities welcome with fine weather and all the usual smiles. However, if you look to the north of the Subcontinent, the lowlands of the Himalayas, particularly in Nepal, are pleasant to trek through, while the higher passes are still cold and shrouded in snow.
if you’re looking Down Under, it’s an ideal time to visit Western Australia, especially Margaret River’s wineries. A self-drive south from Perth serves up breathtaking coastlines, vast Kauri forests and some of Australia's finest vintages. Looking to tick one off the bucket list? March is also the start of the whale shark season in Ningaloo Reef – look to travel late in the month for the best chances of spotting, and swimming with, these marine giants.
