Readers of Australia's Gourmet Traveller Magazine have voted Melbourne as the ‘Best Weekend Getaway' in the annual travel awards published in the June 2012 edition.
The city was praised for its ‘irresistible array of attractions', including major events, Winter Masterpieces arts program and the famous laneways, ‘where the nation's most dynamic dining and bar scenes lurk behind unmarked doors, up hidden stairwells and in converted warehouses, and fashion, design and street culture move to their own distinctive beat.'
Other Victorian winners are Crown Towers for the ‘Best Large Luxury Hotel' and Daylesford's Lake House scooped up the award for ‘Best Hotel/Resort Dining' for the third consecutive year. This year's Gourmet Traveller Travel Awards attracted more than 22,000 votes with the 13 Readers' Choice categories and finalists chosen by an expert panel of travel writers, editors, photographers and independent industry professionals.
