Sydney 'is fun on Australia Day'

Article content

22 January 2010

Holidaymakers hoping to get away in the next week should travel to Sydney, Australia, where they can enjoy a festive celebration of the country's culture and history.

Australia Day, which takes place on 26 January, is an excuse for many natives to let their hair down and enjoy some beer and a barbecue, so Brits hoping to take part must book their tickets as soon as possible, LazyShark.com reports.

The city will be host to parades, bands, races, flag raisings and local citizenship ceremonies on the day, the latter of which can be "surprisingly moving to watch", it stated.

Main events in Sydney include the Sydney Regatta, a free outdoor Jazz festival - Jazz on the Water - along with events taking place all day in Darling Harbour, culminating in a spectacular firework display.

Last year, Lonely Planet's Australia Travel Guide described the country as having some of the world's most beautiful landscapes.
