New Zealand beaches 'offer rare wildlife'

15 December 2009

Those visiting New Zealand should take a trip to the Aramoana Beach to spot rare marine mammals and penguins.

This is the suggestion of Lee Clift, writing for Suite 101, who noted that witnessing natural wildlife can often involve taking a long journey to an isolated location.

However, a 40-minute drive from Dunedin in New Zealand will take holidaymakers to a site where seals, sea lions and other animals are commonplace, he said.

At Aramoana, tourists can see yellow-eyed penguins, which are among the world's rarest species of the bird, while New Zealand fur seals can also be found "lazily twisting, turning and diving" in the waters.

Travellers were warned to be careful while visiting the area as seals and sea lions can "move surprisingly quickly to defend themselves" when feeling threatened.

Earlier this month, executive producer of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy Barrie Osborne described New Zealand as having "awe-inspiring" landscapes.ADNFCR-2704-ID-19513562-ADNFCR
