The event, which took place at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard in Italy, saw the vessel take to the water for the first time and was attended by president and managing director of Cunard, Peter Shanks, and guest of honour Florence Farmer, whose husband was the chef engineer on the original Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Elizabeth 2.
Mr Shanks said that the ship is already an "awesome sight" even though it is not yet finished and still requires furnishing.
He noted that it will "take the [Elizabeth] name far into the 21st century", adding that there has been a vessel bearing the moniker for over 70 of the company's 170 years of history.
The Queen Elizabeth's maiden voyage is due to take place in October of this year, with the opening season running until January 2011.
It is set to feature four restaurants, while 71 per cent of the staterooms found on the ship will include balconies.
