The figures, based on the number of people passing through the Kununurra Visitor Centre, showed 98,341 travellers visited the town in 2009.
Compared to 2008 figures, visitor numbers increased 6% in October, with a noticeable increase in the wet season months of November (25% increase) and December (a massive 57% increase).
Kununurra Visitor Centre’s General Manager, Narelle Brook, said the increase could be attributed to a number of factors including the town’s exposure following Baz Luhrmann’s film Australia.
The town will host the Airnorth Kimberley Moon Experience, an annual outdoor music event held on the banks of the Ord River, at the end of May, with aussie star John Farnham set to headline.
The 10th anniversary concert will be held Saturday 29 May 2010 under a full moon, as part of the two-week Ord Valley Muster, a celebration of the Kimberley outback.
