About

Recommended for:
History & culture | Northern Lights | Rail journey | Short break | Winter

Your holiday begins in the coastal city of Trondheim, the first capital of Norway, where you'll discover an abundance of superb cafes and restaurants along with the wonderful Rockheim, Norway's national pop and rock museum. The second half of this two-centre trip sees you travel to historic Roros, one of Europe's oldest wooden towns, which boasts a collection of more than 100 listed buildings.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Trondheim

Arrive in Trondheim and check in to the Scandic Nidelven Hotel. The hotel has won 'Best Breakfast in Norway' for seven consecutive years so make sure you leave time to sample the morning buffet.

Stay: Scandic Nidelven, Trondheim (Superior)

Day 2
Trondheim

Today is left free for you to enjoy Trondheim, the capital of Norway during the Viking Age. The city has played a central role in the nation's history for the last 1,000 years and many of its most popular attractions bear witness to this fact. None more so than its cathedral, Nidaros, the world's northernmost Gothic cathedral, built over the site of Norway's patron saint, St Olav. St Olav's Way, recognised as a European Cultural Route in 2010, sees pilgrims flock here from all over Europe. Next to the cathedral is Erkebispegården, home to Norway's Crown Jewels. There's also music to be savoured at Rockheim, the national pop and rock centre, great fishing and hiking to be had in the surrounding area, and fine food to be enjoyed at the likes of Havfruen, a seafood restaurant on the river, and at Bakklandet Skydsstation, named Café of the Year by National Geographic in 2012.

Stay: Scandic Nidelven, Trondheim (Superior)

Day 3
Røros

Take the train to Røros and check in for two nights at Vertshuset Røros in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed mining town, one of the oldest wooden towns in Europe, with more than 100 listed buildings. Many of these buildings have preserved their blackened façades, giving the town a distinctly medieval appearance. There's colour in the streets too, though, and a wonderful mix of galleries, workshops, cafes and restaurants, which specialise in food sourced from local suppliers.

Røros

After a day of excitment and adventure, return to your hotel for a relaxing evening at leisure.
