This seven-day rail journey is a wonderful extension to any road trip around this scenic region, whether you choose to begin in vibrant Seattle or Calgary. You'll contrast Seattle's gold rush history and markets with Vancouver’s thriving art scene and mountain trails before beginning the ever-changing rail journey through Alberta, from shimmering fjords and vast glaciers to the snow-topped Rocky mountain ranges. It's all enjoyed with the ultimate in luxury on board the Rocky Mountaineer, with Michelin-standard chefs offering traditional Canadian gastronomy. Complimentary drinks are provided throughout, alongside stays in elegant hotels, including the famous, ultra-luxurious Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1

You'll explore Seattle's vibrant streets today, whether you want to stroll along the picturesque waterfront, explore art galleries, relax in Pioneer Square or discover gold rush history at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Or perhaps head to the bustling Pike Place market, featuring farm tables and crafts, or the soaring observation tower of Space Needle. Head to Seattle's downtown for its huge variety of ultra-fresh seafood and buzzing bar scene.

Day 2
Seattle to Vancouver

Today enjoy the sights in Seattle, perhaps with a ferry cruise around Bainbridge Island or Bremerto, or a visit to the extensive Seattle Art Museum. You'll embark the Rocky Mountaineer where a gourmet dinner awaits as you speed past the spectacular Lake Union. Choose either Silver or Gold Leaf, both of excellent standard, with Gold boasting a second-floor dining cart and viewing platforms at the end of each coach. Other highlights today include the fishing fleet of Everett, the sprawling fields beneath the Cascade mountains and pretty fishing houses among Bellingham Bay, all framed by enormous lakes and snowy mountain peaks.

Day 3

The next few days will see you explore the port city of Vancouver, where a thriving culture scene lies among sprawling greenery and epic mountainous landscapes. Endless mountain trails abound, and downtown, coffee shops and boutique shops line trendy Main Street. Or, explore the art galleries and gardens studded around the city, with the luscious Stanley Park being a particularly wonderful setting for a bike or hike. Perhaps head to Victoria Island on the craggy south of Vancouver, where the glorious Butchart Gardens boast acres of flowers, statues and water features. Your hotel is in a prime location for exploring Vancouver’s extensive food scene, from authentic Chinese to freshly caught seafood.

Day 4
Vancouver to Kamloops

Today you'll head through the sprawling scenery of Canada's outdoor wilderness. Discover Fraser Valley’s lush fields, the forested peaks of the Cascade Mountains, and the arid British Columbia Interior. Further highlights today include the bursting canyon of Hell's Gate and the rocky slopes that line the Thompson River, before traversing over the serene Kamloops lake. It's all enjoyed with a gourmet breakfast and lunch cooked by Michelin-starred chefs, where you'll dishes such as seared tuna, fresh salmon and sourdough flapjacks, washed down with complimentary drinks.

Day 5
Kamloops to Lake Louise

Canada’s Alberta region is one of the country’s most scenic, and your journey today will showcase the best of it. There’s dramatic mountain passes, high climbs to the continental divide and the jagged mountain peaks of Monashee mountains, all dwarfed by the imposing Mount Robson, the Rockies' highest summit. Continuing east along the South Thompson River, you'll witness historic Craigellachie. This spot marks where the last spike was driven home on the Canadian Pacific Railway line, uniting the nation. You'll gaze in wonder at cascading waterfalls, and icy glaciers spilling over the lips of the peaks above, on your way to the charming alpine town of Banff and the brilliant waters of Lake Louise.

Day 6
Lake Louise to Banff

Enjoy the morning at leisure, after lunch a scenic tour will take you to Yoho National Park. Among the attractions are the Spiral Tunnels, Emerald Lake, and a natural rock bridge. The tour ends in Banff, where you will stay overnight.

Day 7
Banff to Calgary with Panoramic Helicopter Tour

Begin the morning with a sightseeing tour of Banff. Among the points of interest are Bow Falls, Lake Minnewanka, Surprise Corner and the Hoodoos. A trip on the Banff Gondola is included. Continue to Kananaskis for a 12-minute Panoramic Helicopter Tour over the remarkable landscape of the Rockies, before a transfer takes you to Calgary where included admission to the Calgary Tower starts your overnight Calgary stay.

Day 8
Calgary to UK

After a last day in Canada, head to Calgary airport for your overnight flight back to the UK
