About

Recommended for:
Natural world | Self-drive | Short break | Spring | Summer

From Alesund's pretty peninsula setting, this road trip brings you deep in Norway's western fjords via the vertigo-inducing switchbacks of the Eagle Road, arriving at Geirangerfjord's waterside idyll for three days of independent exploration. Perhaps contemplate the scenery on gentle fjord-side rambles, or head into the hills on one of the many hiking trails that criss-cross the region's stunning landscapes. It's all complemented by soaks in the hotel's outdoor pool and gourmet dining that showcases the best of the region's gastronomic offerings.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Ålesund

Fly to Ålesund and check in to the Hotel Brosundet whose antique-beamed rooms are framed by views of the pretty waterfront. Spend the afternoon looking around the town's Art Nouveau centre, which was rebuilt from the ashes of a great fire, which engulfed Alseund in 1904. Then, perhaps twalk the 418 steps up to the Mount Aksla viewpoint to ake it all in from above along with sweeping views of the surrounding Sunnmore Alps.

Days 2-4
Geirangerfjord

Collect you hire car for the scenic, 100-kilometre drive to Hotel Union in Geirangerfjord, a region of towering cliffs and powerful waterfalls. It's well worth taking the longer route via the Trollstigen, a series of switchbacks that bring you over high mountain passes. The next two days are free for sightseeing. Perhaps take a drive along the famous Eagle's Road, enjoy a cruise on the fjord and visit Dalsnibba, the region's highest peak, which offers spectacular views of the fjord. There's also the chance to head out on foot, with a number of well-marked trails bringing you among bucolic farmlands and more dramatic outlooks.

Day 5
Ålesund

Drive back to Ålesund for a final night at the Hotel Brosundet. You'll have a free evening to explore further, but you won't need to look far to find some the town's best seafood, with the hotel's own Maki restaurant serving multi-course menus that include everything from haddock dumplings to a delicious, pan-fried catch of the day.
