The elevated perch of Geiranger's Union Hotel provides the ideal base for exploring the shimmering waterways, glaciated peaks and dense forests of Norway's western fjords. This six-day self-drive begins in Ålesund whose Art Nouveau architecture rose, phoenix-like, from the ashes of a fire that engulfed the original town centre at the start of the 20th century.

From the town's pretty peninsula setting you'll head, via the vertigo-inducing switchbacks of the Eagle Road, to Geirangerfjord's waterside idyll for three days of independent exploration; perhaps contemplate the scenery on gentle fjord-side rambles, or head into the hills on one of the many hiking trails that criss-cross the region's stunning landscapes. It's all complemented by soaks in the hotel's outdoor pool and gourmet dining that showcases the best of the region's gastronomic offerings.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Ålesund and check in to the Hotel Brosundet. Spend the afternoon looking around the town, which was rebuilt in characteristic art nouveau style after burning down in 1904, taking in the views of the surrounding Sunnmore Alps. Visiting the view point of Mount Aksla is highly recommended and can be reached by bus or by scaling the numerous steps to the top.

Days 2-4

Collect you hire car and drive around 100 kilometres from Ålesund to the Hotel Union in the heart of Geirangerfjord, a region recognised by UNESCO as one of the world's most beautiful fjords, thanks in no small part to its vertical cliff walls and powerful waterfalls. We suggest taking the scenic driving route via the high mountain road of Trollstigen. The next two days are free for sightseeing. Take a drive along the famous Eagle's Road, enjoy a cruise on the fjord and visit Dalsnibba, the highest peak in the area, which offers breathtaking views of the fjord and surrounding landscape. If you enjoy walking there are plenty of well-marked trails to explore, such as the short hike to Vesterås Farm and the incredible viewpoints beyond it.
