Itinerary

Recommended for:
Activity adventure | History & culture | Natural world | Safari | Wildlife

Wildlife has been roaming the Namibian landscape for centuries, as the UNESCO-listed rock art at Twyfelfontein will attest to. Herds of big game gather at the waterholes beside a vast saltpan at Etosha National Park; mountainous Damaraland is home to black rhino, elephant and other desert-adapted wildlife; Walvis Bay supports dolphins, flamingos and a host of migrant water birds; and the southern Kalahari is a mecca for meerkats.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Windhoek

Arrive in the capital where you'll be met by your guide and transfer to your hotel.

Stay: Elephant Guesthouse or similar

Day 2
Kalahari Desert

Drive via Rehoboth, the centre of Namibia's Baster community, into the deep-red dunes of the Kalahari Desert. The vegetation around the dunes supports a range of wildlife, from springbok, gemsbok and giraffe to aardwolf, bat-eared fox and playful meerkats. Spend the night at a comfortable desert lodge.

Stay: Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch or similar

Breakfast & dinner included

Days 3-4
Namib Desert

Drive south towards the giant dunes of the Namib Desert. Enjoy a morning visit to Sossusvlei, a photogenic clay pan ringed by apricot-coloured dunes that many people argue are the highest in the world. You'll also have the chance to visit Sesriem Canyon, a remarkable sandstone channel formed by the Tsauchab River forging its way into the desert.

Stay: Desert Homestead & Horse Trails or similar

Breakfast & dinner included

Days 5-6
Swakopmund

Drive north via the lunar landscapes of the Kusieb Canyon to Swakopmund, a quaint German town pinned between the desert and the ocean. Just to the south you'll get to cruise on the Walvis Bay lagoon, home to flocks of flamingos, dolphins and pelicans.

Stay: Central Guesthouse or similar

Breakfast included

Days 7-8
Damaraland

Visit the lichen fields near Wlotzka's Beken, the seal colony at Cape Cross and a haunting shipwreck on the Skeleton Coast before reaching Grootberg Lodge in the semi-desert wilderness of Damaraland. Tracking black rhino will be a highlight of your stay here.

Stay: Grootberg Lodge or similar

Breakfast & dinner included

Days 9-11
Etosha National Park

One of Africa's best game reserves, Etosha protects a vast shallow bowl of silvery clay, about the size of Holland. During the dry season, animals converge to drink at the waterholes beside the pan, making Etosha an ideal place to park up and let the wildlife come to you. Travelling from west to east, enjoy three nights of game viewing, with black and white rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe and antelope among the potential sightings.

Stay: Mushara Bush Camp or similar

Breakfast & dinner included

Day 12
Windhoek

Return to Windhoek to catch your flight home, stopping en route at Okahandja, an important centre for wood carvers and a great place to pick up a souvenir.

Breakfast included
