Your holiday begins in forward-thinking Frankfurt, a skyscraper-filled metropolis straddling the meandering River Main. Next stop is Berlin, inspiration to Marx, Einstein, Bismarck and Bowie and home to some of Germany's most thought-provoking monuments. Along with a rich and varied history, Germany's captivating capital has a vibrant art scene, superb nightlife and a laidback charm that belies its size and stature. Continue to Nuremberg, Bavaria's second-largest city, where the Nazi party staged their most fanatical rallies and the boycott of Jewish businesses began. Here you'll discover impressive Gothic and medieval architecture and, if you're travelling in December, one of Europe's most spectacular Christmas markets. Finish your holiday in the Bavarian city of Munich, a contradictory cacophony of street cafes, beer halls, high-tech industry, fine art galleries and a charming town centre, brimming with chocolate-box buildings.
Day by day itinerary
Arrive in Frankfurt and transfer to your chosen hotel. Embark on a two-hour private city tour, taking in some of Frankfurt's many museums, the fine food shops, restaurants and cafes of Fressgass, the old Opera, the luxury shops and designer boutiques of Goethestrasse, the 18th century Lutheran church of St Paul's and the Hauptwache, from where you'll enjoy wonderful views across the city. Afterwards, freshen-up and relax in your hotel.
Stay: InterCity Hotel Frankfurt (Standard) or Mövenpick Frankfurt City (Superior)
Transfer from your hotel to Frankfurt's central train station, where you'll board a train to Berlin, travel in Standard Class, or First Class for an additional supplement. After a journey of just over four hours, through the heart of the German countryside, you'll arrive in Germany's capital. Enjoy a two-hour city tour, taking in a selection of the city's most famous buildings, memorials and monuments, including the Kurfürstendamm, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche church, the Siegessäule, the Government district (Regierungsviertel), the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial, a poignant monument to the millions of Jews murdered during World War II. You'll also the remains of the Berlin Wall and the bustling public square of Potsdamer Platz. The tour is private, however, so you can choose what you'd like to see. Afterwards, transfer to your hotel.
The following day is free to explore Berlin at your own pace, or take an optional excursion to Sanssouci Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site on the outskirts of the city.
Stay: Meininger Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Standard) NH Berlin Mitte (Superior)
Travel by train to Nuremberg, where you'll spend the night. A private walking tour of the old town takes in the city's impressive castle at an additional cost. The castle was an important medieval palace, which served as the home to every emperor of the Holy German Empire between 1050 and 1571, and also offers superb views across the Nuremburg skyline. You'll also visit the former Nazi Congress, which was the scene of Hitler's most fervent political rallies.
Stay: InterCity Hotel Nuremberg (Standard) or Maritim Nürnberg
The last stop on your German rail holiday is Munich, the capital of Bavaria, famed for its beer halls - think Oktoberfest - its stylish café culture, exceptional art galleries and abundance of museums. Located near the Alps, Munich is a city steeped in the traditions of the mountains, while also boasting some of the Germany's most picturesque architecture.
Arrive by train and take a two-hour private city tour, visiting the beautiful Baroque summer residence of the Bavarian kings and the birthplace of the great King Ludwig II. Other highlights include the Cathedral of the Virgin, whose breathtaking Italian domes can be seen from across the city, and Marienplatz, Munich's main square, which is dominated by the vast neo-Gothic City Hall. Again, the tour is private, so you can tailor-make what you'd like to see. Transfer to your chosen hotel.
