Visit Illinois

Introduction

Illinois is a largely rural state of rich, flat farmland in what is known as the 'Land of Lincoln', thanks to the concentration of sites related to the former President around state capital Springfield. Abraham Lincoln lived in Springfield for 24 years before assuming the presidency in 1861 and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is full of artefacts and interactive displays.

The mighty Mississippi River winds its way throughout Illinois and some picturesque scenery can be found along its banks in the north-west in the 'Driftless Region'.    The state's largest city Chicago offers a city break with a laid-back feel, with world-class museums, lakefront vistas and award-winning restaurants and hotels.
