Cadiz is almost entirely surrounded by water, sitting on a peninsula jutting out into a bay. Like many Andalucian cities, it's filled with Moorish traces, most evident in the old town that's a real pleasure to explore, all cobbled streets and small squares.

The golden cupola of the Cathedral is a lovely landmark to use as a navigational aid, but it's very hard to get seriously lost here as the sea is nearly always in sight. And, like all good port cities should be, Cadiz is a convivial sort of place. It's always been noted for its tolerance and warmth, and the city's inhabitants make sure that they – and everyone else – are having a good time. Particularly so during Carnival, one of Spain's most exciting spring festivals to which Cadiz plays host.
