Introduction
Tailor-made tours of Eastern Norway generally start and end in Oslo, the country's graceful capital. Spending a few days here enables visitors to take in a host of superb museums dedicated to the talents and achievements of some of Norway's most famous sons - Munch, Ibsen, Vigeland, Heyerdahl and Nansen among them.
From there, it's a short drive north to Lillehammer, where skiers can swish through forests and swoosh across high mountains in winter. It's scenic setting at the tip of Lake Mjøso, Norway's largest inland lake, makes it a popular holiday destination in summer, too.
Rugged mountains and lakes also provide plenty of appeal in the Telemark region, home of the Telemark Canal. Self-driving is the simplest way to access this part of Eastern Norway and it's become a popular stop-off on self-drive holidays between Bergen and Oslo.
