Introduction
In some respects, Napier is lost somewhere in the 1930s. In 1931, a devastating earthquake levelled Napier, but its subsequent development during the Art Deco movement is beautifully evident today. It was developed in the finest style; many of its buildings still survive today, making the town a key attraction for architects, designers and planning-buffs from across the globe.
With a pleasantly warm climate, the area is also home to the country's oldest wineries including the Mission Estate, which was founded in 1858 by French Catholic missionaries, who made the most of the fine grape- growing conditions.
