Introduction
The Canterbury region stretches from the ocean to the Alps and is a land of gentle plains and jagged peaks.
Here you can ski, play golf, bungee jump, go white water rafting, mountain biking, whale watching, and visit top-class wineries and gardens.
The north Canterbury district of Waimakariri is another place in which to experience the great outdoors. Jet boating through the Waimakariri Gorge, golf, riding and sailing on the Kaiapoi River are a few of the activities available.
Food and wine tasting is another regional pleasure. Olive groves, vineyards and fields of organic vegetables cover much of the landscape, which also has a scattering of rural towns such as Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Pegasus Town, Woodend and Oxford. A host of farmers' markets, roadside stalls, cafes and restaurants offer food from local farmers, cheesemakers and food artisans.
