Zanzibar & Pemba

Tanzania's spice island

Visit Zanzibar & Pemba

Introduction

The name Zanzibar is surely one of Africa's most evocative, up there with Timbuktu in Mali and Casablanca in Morocco. Its sultry tropical climate, Islamic influences and multitude of dreamy white sand beaches make it truly idyllic destination, whether combined with a safari on the African mainland, or as a beach holiday in its own right.

The state of Zanzibar comprises two islands, Unjuga - Zanzibar Island - and Pemba, to the north. Both have palm-lined beaches fringed by coral reefs, and their idyllic coastlines feature some of Tanzania's most luxurious beach resorts. Dhows are a familiar sight off the coast, transporting vanilla, cloves and other spices, or trawling for fish. Snorkelling and diving are popular activities, while a tour of the spice plantations and a visit to Stone Town on Zanzibar are also highly recommended.

Where to go in Zanzibar & Pemba

Pemba

Pemba Island lies to the northeast of Zanzibar, but is much less visited than its bigger brother on the Swahili Coast. As such this 75 kilometre-long island is a terrific place to get away from it all.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar has been an important trading base for more than 2,000 years. The Portuguese, British and Omani Arabs have all left their mark on the so-called Spice Island over the years and as a result Zanzibar is a wonderfully colourful and captivating place.
