With around only 1,000 spirit bears known to exist in the world – 400 of them in the surroundings of Spirit Bear Lodge – catching sight of these elusive creatures is an experience that’s truly once-in-a-lifetime for many. On the shores of the Great Bear Rainforest, the remote Spirit Bear Lodge is spectacularly located when it comes to wildlife, also home to grizzlies, black bears and, in the surrounding ocean, orcas and humpbacks.
The largest intact temperate rainforest on the planet, the Great Bear Rainforest is not only home to bears and whales, but also bald eagles, wolves and dolphins, which you'll spot on included boat trips and wildlife walks straight from the lodge. There's also chances to enjoy secluded picnics on the beach, guided kayaking and canoeing trips and cultural walks with the indigenous Kitasoo people, one of fifteen nations who reside in the forest.
En-suite rooms with wood-clad walls and panoramic vistas are cosy and rustic rather than luxe, in keeping with the remote, secluded feel of the lodge. Come evening, the dining room’s floor-to-ceiling windows provide a wonderful backdrop as you enjoy three-course, hearty dinners – expect the likes of just-caught halibut, Canadian bannock bread and homemade peanut butter cookies, accompanied by local beer and wine.
Visits between June and October are recommended, with June and July a great time for grizzly cubs as mothers bring them out on the hunt for high sedge grasses, while breaching humpbacks skirt the coastline for mackerel and herring. Then, August brings the arrival of the great salmon run and bears gather in large numbers – particularly the elusive spirit bear. Come autumn, the salmon spawning is in full force, with grizzly, black and spirit bears all competing for the best spots.
