Voted Portugal’s 'Leading Golf Resort' in the World Travel Awards
Golf | Relaxation | Summer
You’ll know Portugal’s southernmost region, The Algarve, for its sprawling beaches, idyllic coastline and dramatic cliffs. However, its striking architecture – both Roman and Moorish – demand attention, as does the region’s nature reserves and standing as a golfing destination. It’s the latter than Penina takes full advantage of, featuring no less than three courses spread of 360 acres of perfect grasslands. In fact, it features the Algarve’s first 18-hole championship course. But there’s plenty for non-golfers too, with lagoon cruises, boardwalk strolls and miles upon miles of white sand.
Considering Penina’s golfing highlights, it’s easy to forget that – among the sweeping greens – this is a luxury hotel. Across a range of room options, contemporary design sensibilities are realised in chic furnishings and dark wood accents. The en suites come with bathtubs while most feature private balconies with views either of the mountain-framed Monchique countryside or the pool. Studio Guestrooms offer some extra space along with a grand overlook of the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Golf Course, while the suites are particularly welcoming, host to two private balconies and a series of luxury furnishings. There’s also rooms specifically designed for families.
With six dining venues, there’s something to suit every taste – from mid-golf snacks to candlelit romance. Perhaps start the day with some buffet indulgence at the Sagres Restaurant or end it with a fine dining appraisal of French gastronomy at Le Grill. There are also Italian classics at the poolside L’arlecchino and bar relaxation at Monchique while the golf clubhouse serves typical club offerings, perhaps washed down with a gin and tonic. Lastly, summer sees the Dunas Beach Restaurant open, serving range of light bites to views of the Atlantic’s brilliant blue.
A frequent host of the Portugal Open, it’s the golf courses that grab the headlines here. And, to complement, there’s a driving range, putting green and golf lessons. You’ll even enjoy preferred green fees at nearby courses. But there are plenty of other amenities to keep you occupied. Alongside the Algarve’s largest private non-heated pool, there are floodlit tennis courts, a jogging track, a 24-hour fitness centre, a sauna and billiards tables. Relax further with some spa treatments or the hotel’s beach club.
