Also known as California Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway is America’s dream drive and one of our most popular self-drive itineraries in the USA. Travel south from San Francisco to Los Angeles through mile upon mile of mountain and ocean views, acclaimed vineyards, historic buildings, beautiful beaches and rural towns, a world away from their big-city anchors.

Days 1–2 San Francisco
Start your adventure at one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities for two full days exploring Nob Hill, Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf and crooked, yet instantly recognisable, Lombard Street. Spend two nights at the Handlery Union Square Hotel.
Day 3 Carmel
At Monterey follow 17-Mile Drive past the famous Pebble Beach golf links then continue to Carmel. Overnight at Carmel Mission Inn.
Day 4 San Simeon
The wild and rugged 90-mile stretch towards San Simeon past Big Sur is the uncontested high point of the drive, where the road snakes between the crashing Pacific and Big Sur’s rugged and lonely mountains. San Simeon is your halfway point and the site of Hearst Castle, the magnificent estate of publisher William Randolph Hearst. It is now a National Historic Monument and open for tours - we highly recommend that you make the stop. Overnight at the San Simeon Cavalier Ocean Resort.
Days 5–6 Santa Barbara
Head south to the beautiful coastal town of Santa Barbara. Its fine wineries are often compared to those of Napa 20 years ago and its beaches are incredible too. Spend two nights at the Pepper Tree Inn.
Day 7 Santa Monica
Continue on through Malibu to Santa Monica, a great base to explore Los Angeles yet a must-see in its own right. Santa Monica offers a laidback beachfront community, an historic pier and probably America’s best weekend Farmers’ Market. Overnight at Hotel Carmel.
