Explore this little-visited South East Asian gem

Discover this little-visited and often overlooked South East Asian gem. Tucked away on the fringes of the region, the island has a dramatic coastline and boasts a beautiful interior of pristine lakes, jagged mountain ranges, deep gorges, rice paddies and tea plantations.

In sharp contrast are the 21st Century cities, which epitomise Taiwan’s upwardly mobile development.


Day 1: Flight to Taipei

Depart the UK for your flight to Taipei.

Day 2: Taipei

You will be met upon arrival and transferred to your hotel in Taipei city.

Day 3: Taipei

Spend a full day exploring Taiwan’s capital city, including the National Palace Museum, Martyrs Shrine, Chinag Kaishek Memorial Hall, Lungshan Temple and Taipei 101. In the evening visit the fascinating Shilin Night Market, undoubtedly one of the highlights of a visit to Taipei.

Day 4: Taipei - Sun Moon Lake

After breakfast, depart Taipei and travel to the beautiful Sun Moon Lake. The lake, located in the middle of Taiwan, with an elevation of 748 metres above sea level, is the only large natural lake in Taiwan. The southern part of Lalu Island, the lake’s main feature, is shaped like a new moon, and the northern part is shaped like a sun; hence the lake’s name.

Day 5: Sun Moon Lake - Kaohsiung

Continue overland to Tainan, Taiwan’s olderst city, where you will visit Anping Old Street and the country’s first Confucian temple, built in 1665. In the afternoon head to Kaohsiung and the Fo Guang Shan Monastery where you will stay overnight. Fo Guang Shan is arguably Taiwan’s most beautiful Buddhist monastery as well as being the island’s largest and wealthiest meditation centre. This immense complex is located on a hill just outside Kaohsiung City known as The Light of Buddha Mountain. In the evening head to the Liohe Night Market where around 138 stalls serve local food snacks and provide entertainment and games for locals and tourists alike.

Day 6: Kaohsiung - Taitung County

Depart Kaohsiung and continue overland to Taitung County. On arrival check in to your hotel before heading out to see the Basian Caves, a series of 16 caves, some as high as 100 meters and the site of Taiwan’s earliest prehistoric discovery. You will also visit Sansiantai, a beautiful coastal headland facing a small island said to be the site where three of China’s Eight Immortals once landed, giving the island its name, the "Terrace of the Three Immortals".

Day 7: Taitung - Hualien

Head north up the spectacular East Coast Highway to Hualien. Visit Tzu Chi Cultural Park to learn more about buddhism in Taiwan. The rest of the day is free for you to explore at your leisure.

Day 8: Hualien - Yilan

Travel onwards to Taroko Gorge, one of the highlights of a trip to Taiwan. The gorge is located in the Taroko National Park, an area famed for its spectacular mountain scenery and impressive marble canyons stretching along the beautiful Liwu River. You will see the Swallow Caves and Tunnel of Nine Turns, two of the most beautiful sections of the gorge before heading to Yilan where you will stay for 1 night.

Day 9: Yilan - Taipei

Head back by road to Taipei. Enjoy some last minute shopping before transferring to the airport for your onward flight.
