WEXAS is committed to providing information that is accessible
by all users. The WEXAS website has been built using a Content
Management system. This enables and helps us to create a highly
accessible and up-to-date site.
We have made our site accessible to visually impaired readers,
dyslexic users or those who find it difficult to use a mouse.
This is an extension of making it accessible to everyone.
For example, did you know that dyslexic people find it difficult
to read longer pieces of text and that the wider the column of text
the more difficult it is to read? Also that serif fonts (such as
Times New Roman) are more difficult for dyslexic people to read, as
are words in italics? However, research has shown that, when it
comes to reading from the screen, most people actually respond in a
dyslexic way. So in addressing the needs of this audience you are
improving the experience for many more.
Immediacy
Immediacy, our Content Management System, provide us with the
tools we require to make our site as accessible as possible.
Having a system that provides what Immediacy call a 'mandatory
accessibility switch' helps to ensure that those people
contributing and managing content on the site don’t forget easily
forgotten and overlooked functions such as filling in the 'alt
tags’ (descriptive phrases for images) with something
meaningful.
For both visually impaired and mobility impaired visitors the
way in which menus and form elements work can be vitally important
to their experience on the site. If we are using things like
drop-down menus or creating forms on our site, then using the
Immediacy system to provide suitably accessible key commands and
short-cuts automatically, means that we should be able to satisfy
the main accessibility guidelines.
Also, having a system that automatically creates a 'text only'
view of the website is something we were very keen to have.
Accessibility compliance
Immediacy's built-in compliance checker gives us the peace of
mind that our site will automatically comply with single-A,
double-A or triple-A standards for compliance with key legislation
such as the Disability Discrimination Act.
Immediacy CMS allows us to run selected accessibility compliance
tests in the author mode before the content goes live – so that we
can be doubly sure that everything’s in order. These tests
incorporate the acknowledged standards used by services provided by
organisations such as Bobby and Watchfire and can be updated, as
standards and rules change and evolve.
Please contact us if you
would like any more information on the accessibility of our
website.
