Sri Lanka & The Maldives
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive in Sri Lanka and proceed to the Heritance Kandalama, a 5-star hotel just minutes from two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rooms have private balconies and guests are afforded views of Lake Kandalama and the surrounding jungle.
Day 2: Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa
After breakfast, climb UNESCO-listed Sigiriya Rock, a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200m from the scrub jungle. In the afternoon, visit Polonnaruwa, the second capital of Sri Lanka, also honoured by UNESCO. Overnight at the Heritance Kandalama.
Day 3: Dambulla & Kandy
Start with a visit to the 1st century Dambulla rock temples. It’s hard to know what to admire most, the complex of five painted caves, the giant rock Buddha that stands at the entrance, or the lines of devotees who come to place offerings in a haze of insence. Proceed to Kandy, the cultural capital, and check in at the 5-star Earl’s Regency Hotel. Visit the famous Temple of the Tooth and take in a cultural show.
Day 4: Kandy
Make a trip to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where you may get to help bathe the elephants. See the sights of Kandy in the afternoon, including the lake, bazaar, museum and arts centre, before returning to the hotel.
Days 5–12: Maldives
Transfer to the airport for your flight to the Maldives. Like a string of pearls scattered across the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are the embodiment of an idealised island paradise: turquoise water, sugar-white sand and verdant bowing palm trees. Stay for a week at Baros Maldives, a luxury resort on a tiny island just 25 minutes by boat from the airport. Thatched-roof villas with spacious verandas sit nestled on the sand or off jetties above the lagoon. Diving and snorkelling are world class, as is the spa and the food in the over-water restaurants.
