A Ramble In The Jungle
We recommend Reserva Amazonica, a private ecological jungle reserve and research centre. Its just 45-minutes along the Madre de Dios River by motorised canoe. Local materials were used to build the 38 cabins, which are rustic and attractively furnished with log chairs, mosquito netting and kerosene lamps. Each has a private terrace with hammocks.
If you like a warm shower, we recommend the suites as they use solar power to heat water. Activities include paddling in dugout canoes on the magnificent Sandoval Lake, piranha fishing, excursions to see various species of monkeys and butterflies, guided rainforest walks by day or night and sunset boat trips with the opportunity to spot caiman and nocturnal birds, visits to a butterfly farm and caiman spotting on the river by night. Make sure you dont forget to bring your torch and binoculars.
