Amazon basin cruise expeditions
Amazon Cruising Aqua Expeditions
Of the five main Amazonian countries, by far the best for boating is Peru. Over 60% is in the Amazon basin and some of the forest’s least touched areas lie within its borders. Aqua Expeditions’ 130ft M/V Aqua was the first luxury cruise ship on the northern Amazon River. Just 24 guests stay in air-conditioned oversized cabins, with en suite sitting areas and generous picture windows. Food is as good as anything in Lima and the outdoor lounge serves super pisco sours.
Itinerary
Begin in Iquitos, a ramshackle rubber-boom town and the gateway to the Amazon. Spend three nights on the water, venturing from the ship in motorised skiffs, accompanied by naturalist guides. Watch fishermen glide by in dug-out canoes, children waving from the banks of the river and an ever-changing landscape of tangled green creepers. Spot three-toed sloths, capuchin monkeys, parrots, toucans and pink river dolphins. Enter local villages and meet the people for whom the river is a lifeline.
Prices from: £1,765–£1,995 pp incl. transfers, 3-night fb cruise & guided daily excursions. 4- & 7-night cruises available. International flights are additional.
