Alta in Northern Norway calls itself the ’City of the Northern Lights’. Boasting more sightings than anywhere else on earth, from October to April this is the perfect destination to see the spectacular natural phenomenon. Alta is the largest city in Northern Norway and offers a whole host of shops, pubs and restaurants and earned its stripes as a base for spotting the Northern Lights when the first ever observatory dedicated to the phenomenon was built here at the end of the 19th century.
Today it’s lost none of its appeal, thanks in part to comfortable, character hotels like the Thon Hotel Vica Alta, your base for this three-night break. Day 1
Fly with Scandinavian Airlines from London to Alta (via Olso).
Check into the Thon Hotel Vica
Day 2
After breakfast you have time to relax in Alta or try out optional excursions. Maybe you want to take an evening snowmobile safari to Alta Igloo or try out your husky mushing skills on a husky safari? You also have a chance to get a real insight to Sami culture and history on a Sami Adventure. Arctic evening including a gourmet meal is perfect for a Northern Lights excursion too...
Day 3
After breakfast it’s time to say goodbye to Alta and fly home via Oslo with SAS.

Dog-sledge trips in the land of the elk with Holmen Hundesenter

Drive your own dog-sledge or relax and enjoy the scenery as a passenger. Learn how the huskies are trained, and prepare yourself and the huskies for a race. You’ll be taken through the pine forest following the banks of the Alta River or up through Altadalen valley to the Finnmarksvidda mountain plain. Coffee and cakes served in a lavvu. Price includes transport from Rica Hotel Alta, thermal suit, shoes, hat and gloves and coffee/tea and cake.
Snowmobile Tour and a visit to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel

The trip starts right outside Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel (formerly known as Alta Igloo Hotel). You will journey through a breathtaking variety of beautiful landscapes as you follow the old trade route towards Karasjok. The ground is varied; from forest and valley to unending, snow-covered plains. The safari ends with a visit to the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, a fascinating building of ice and snow covering 2000 m2, with 30 bedrooms, suites, ice bar, ice gallery, ice chapel etc. Delicious lunch served in Laksestua restaurant before departure.
Price includes transport from Alta centre (Rica Hotel), fuel, thermal suit, shoes, hat/helmet, gloves. Hot drink and lunch. Driving licence for car/motorcycle required if driving snowmobile
A taste of Norwegian lapland

Experience a unique evening in the Thon Hotel Vica including out-doors hot tub and a gourmet meal. Start with a dip in the outdoors hot tub with temperatures of +40 degrees Celsius and a sauna in the spa. After the bath you visit Restaurant Haldde where you can dine on Kamchatka (King) Crab, grilled fish or lavvu gourmet dishes of reindeer and mountain cranberries, blueberry sorbet or cloudberries for dessert.
Price includes hot tub and dinner as specified. Towels provided, please bring your own swimwear.
