Flåm Extension

The small, picturesque village of Flåm is nestled deep in a tributary of the world's longest and deepest fjord, Sognefjord. It marks the end of the spectacular Flåm Railway, a track that climbs nearly 900m from fjord to mountaintop, spiralling through tunnels cut into the rock and exposing passengers to breathtaking views. Surrounded by steep mountainsides, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys, it's a wonderful place to stop for a few nights on the Norway in a Nutshell route. A great day out is to take the train to Myrdal, hire bikes and freewheel back Flåm with the views stretching out before you.

Prices from: £899 pp (3-star), £1,075 pp (4-star) incl. flights with sas, 2 nights b&b in Oslo, Norway in a nutshell tour with 2 nights half-board in Flåm en route & 2 nights b&b in Bergen.

Balestrand extension

Also tucked away on the edge of the Sognefjord, tiny and tranquil Balestrand has been drawing tourists since the latter half of the 19th century. Word particularly spread among artists, many of whom settled here, fascinated by the natural beauty, the local culture and the constant change of light in the sky. Galleries and exhibitions run throughout the summer, including a collection of local works housed in the Kviknes Hotel, an historic hotel with an imposing Swiss-style façade, and your base for two nights between Oslo and Bergen on the Sognefjord in a Nutshell route.

Prices from: £899 pp (3-star), £1,085 pp (4-star) incl. flights with SAS, 2 nights B&B in Oslo, Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour with 2 nights half-board in Balestrand en route & 2 nights B&B in Bergen.
