Even in the Arctic where adventures abound, staying aboard the world’s only hotel ship frozen in sea ice, wondering when the next 700-kilo polar bear is going to walk beneath the bowsprit takes some beating.
But getting there by dogsled, pulled across the snows of Svalbard by a team of Alaskan huskies under your own command puts this Arctic adventure in a league of its own.
Day 1 Longyearbyen
Arrive in Longyearbyen and take the airport shuttle to the Basecamp Trapper’s Hotel, a unique lodge furnished with driftwood, slate and animal furs. No two rooms are the same, except for the comfortable beds and bathrooms, and you’ll be left in no doubt that you’ve reached the wilds of Svalbard.
Day 2 Basecamp ship in the Ice
Travel with your guide to the dog kennel at Bolterdalen where 90 happy Alaskan huskies will be waiting for you. Participants are responsible for their own dogs and the guide will give a lesson in how to handle a sled team. When ready, you’ll mush into the white open landscape, making the 70 km journey to the Basecamp Ship in the Ice, a 100-year-old schooner frozen each winter in the waters of Tempelfjorden (right) and your base for the next two nights.
Day 3 Tempelfjorden
After breakfast, set off with your dog team to explore the breathtaking scenery around Tempelfjorden. Dogsledding in Svalbard is an experience that touches the soul, with the panting of the dogs and the scraping of the sled against the snow the only sounds to break the silence.
Day 4 Longyearbyen
This is the last day of dogsledding so get up early and make the most of it. Lunch is served in the open on the way back to Longyearbyen, where the comfort of the Basecamp Trapper’s Hotel awaits.
Day 5 Departure
See the sights before departing for the airport and home.
