Self-drive highlights
PAIHIA
Paihia makes an excellent base for exploring the magnificent Bay of Islands. We recommend a cruise to the ‘hole in the rock’ at the tip of Cape Brett. Close by is the historic Treaty House at Waitangi, which marks the beginning of New Zealand as a nation.
MATAKANA COAST
Matakana Coast Wine Country stretches along meandering river valleys and a stunning coastline, providing a perfect break in the drive between the Bay of Islands and Auckland. The area is famed for its food, wineries and thriving art scene.
WAIPOUA FOREST
Waipoua Forest is one of the best examples of kauri forest in New Zealand. Good walking tracks provide easy access to the two largest living kauris – Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere. The forest also has the largest population of North Island brown kiwi.
