Japanese arts & cultural discovery tour
Japan is an intoxicating contradiction, a cosmopolitan country with a pervasive sense of antiquity and a fusion of culture and style, from the suited business men of Tokyo to the kimono-clad geishas of Kyoto. This ten-night tour shows you the futuristic architecture of Tokyo, the ancient traditions of Kyoto and the tranquil gardens and secret islands of Okayama and Naoshima.
Days 1–3 Tokyo
On arrival at Narita airport, you’ll be met and transferred to the Narita Express train and given taxi vouchers to take you to your accommodation, the Park Hotel Tokyo. Experience a sensory overload and spend three days exploring this vibrant city with a visit to the Senso-ji Temple or the fashion hub, Shibuya.
Days 4–6 Kyoto
Travel by Bullet Train to Kyoto, the Imperial Capital of Japan and one of the most culturally rich cities in Asia. Home to 17 unesco World Heritage Sites and more than 2,000 temples, shrines and gardens, Kyoto has retained much of its original character and charm.
Days 7–8 Okayama/Naoshima
Use your all-inclusive seven-day Japan Rail Pass to travel to Okayama, home to Koraku-en – one of Japan’s ‘big three’ gardens. Continue on to Uno and catch the ferry to Naoshima, a forgotten island in the Seto Inland Sea, and see its collection of contemporary art galleries, exhibitions and installations. Stay at Benesse House, a blend of art and nature designed by renowned architect, Tadao Ando.
Day 9 Kurashiki
Journey back through Uno and Okayama by ferry and train and then onto Kurashiki, a historic town famous for its black-tiled warehouse buildings, which were originally used to store rice taxes paid in feudal Japan. The city’s galleries and museums are dotted along its meandering canals.
Days 10–11 Tokyo
Journey back on the super-fast Shinkansen train for your final night in Tokyo, then transfer to the airport via Airport Limousine Bus to catch your flight home.
